Officer placed on leave

County sheriff’s office leading investigation

BOARDMAN — A township police officer was placed on paid administrative leave based on an investigation by the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office.

Patrick Klingensmith, 46, of Canfield, was arrested by the sheriff’s office on charges of domestic violence, endangering children, dereliction of duty and obstructing official business stemming from a Dec. 15, 2019, incident.

Boardman police Chief Todd Werth said the charges are based on an incident at a residence where officers responded. Initially after the incident, Werth said Klingensmith was placed on restricted duty.

Werth said a request to have MCSO handle the investigation was then made.

Due to the department’s collective bargaining agreement, Klingensmith was then placed on administrative leave with pay based on the charges, Werth said.

Klingensmith was arrested and released on bail from the Mahoning County jail on Wednesday.

“What will happen is, the criminal process will play out with the internal investigation” and a decision regarding Klingensmith will be made, Werth said.
