Crash victims’ bodies not recognizable
YOUNGSTOWN — It could be a while before the identities of two people killed in a fiery crash on the city’s West Side are known.
The man and woman in the car, reported stolen from Campbell, and their identification were “burned beyond recognition,” Youngstown police Chief Robin Lees said.
The Mahoning County Coroner’s Office will work to determine the identities of the two people who died in the car through dental and other medical records, Lees said. It isn’t known when the office will be able to learn the identities of the two, he said.
An officer discovered the car on fire at 8:39 p.m. Wednesday in the yard of Brentwood Originals, 1309 N. Meridian Road. The crash occurred on Salt Springs Road by North Meridian Road after the vehicle hit a utility pole and burst into flames, Lees said.
“The fire was intense,” he said. “It was a very bad, quick-burning fire.”
The car was reported stolen from a Campbell residence with the owner’s cellphone in the vehicle, Lees said. The owner, who called police, had GPS tracking for his phone, so he was able to determine where the car was, Lees said.
A Youngstown officer spotted the car on North Meridian Road and pursued it. But the stolen vehicle was “going very fast when it fled. The officer terminated the pursuit (on Vestal Road) because of the speed involved,” Lees said.
A short time later, another officer on patrol discovered the crash scene.
The cause of the crash isn’t known, but it could have been speed, Lees said.
