Overdose awareness event tonight in Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN — An event will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. tonight at the First Unitarian Universalist Church, 1105 Elm St. as part of Overdose Awareness Day.

Overdose Awareness Day is a global event held on or around Aug. 31 each year that aims to raise awareness of overdose and reduce the stigma of drug-related death. It acknowledges the grief felt by families and friends.

The event spreads the message that the tragedy of overdose death is preventable. It offers loved ones the opportunity to step out of the darkness and into the light by having a day of remembrance without stigma, shame or judgment.

The following are activities planned: Music and children’s activities and games; free Narcan training and distribution from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. by Mahoning County Public Health; substance use disorder education; harm reduction education and supply distribution; Narcan, fentanyl & Xylazine test strips and condoms.

Speakers will be Hope Lovrinoff-Moran, Ohio Can Mahoning County Harm Reduction Outreach; Cassie Harrell, Voice of Loss and Voice of Recovery: Impact of Harm Reduction, 8 p.m.; and the Rev. J. Boyd, Harm Reduction as Social Justice, 8:15 p.m.

Also available will be community resource tables; free feminine hygiene essentials, diapers, personal hygiene products, and children’s gift bags; luminarias lit for those lost to overdose in Mahoning County; luminarias provided free for attendees; and a candlelight vigil and recitation of names of those lost to overdose, 8:30 p.m.
