Citizen shot in gunfire exchange at West Side home

YOUNGSTOWN — At about 1 a.m. today, a Youngstown police officer and a citizen in a home in the 100 block of South Maryland Avenue exchanged gunfire. The citizen was injured in the exchange and is in critical condition at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, according to a Youngstown police press release.

No officers were injured in the incident, the Youngstown Police Department stated in the release, which was issued at about 9:15 a.m.

Officers were dispatched to the home for a disturbance call. When the first officer arrived the officer “was immediately met with gunfire from a male inside the house,” the release states. The citizen was shot in the exchange of gunfire that ensued.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was called to conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the exchange of gunfire, the press releases states.

The Youngstown Police Department Internal Affairs Division also will conduct an internal investigation, which “reviews departmental policy,” the release states. “Officer(s) involved were placed on administrative leave pursuant departmental policy.”
