Thurs. 11:15 a.m.: Lowellville schools shut down after reported gun incident

Parents gathered on the football field at Lowellville High School today after a reported shooting at the school this morning. Students are being released to their parents.

LOWELLVILLE – The Lowellville local schools went into lockdown about 10:30 this morning according to an all call from Superintendent Eugene Thomas, who advised parents not to come to the school.

“We will report to you as soon as possible,” he said.

According to students and a parent outside the school, a junior high student fired a gun in the air in the cafeteria and then pointed it at his own head and fired.

A boy who was sitting with the shooter said he did not know whether the gun was real or not, but blood did begin to come from the child.

Many students and parents were outside the school. It is not known what the status is inside the school.

A parent outside the school said a second “all call” from the school district indicated that the incident did not involve any other children, and that the students would be released from the school this morning.
