Former West Branch teacher sentenced to 14 days in jail

RAVENNA — Former West Branch High School history teacher and coach Matthew A. Thomas, 41, of Kirk Road in Canfield, was sentenced Monday in Portage County Common Pleas Court to 14 days in the Portage County jail — He pleaded guilty earlier to sexual imposition involving a 10-year-old girl in 2015.

His sentence begins Friday.

He was accused of having inappropriate contact with the girl in Portage County. His conviction is a third-degree misdemeanor.

Thomas was teacher and coach of the West Branch High School boys soccer team before he was terminated over the matter. He was assigned to home duties after the West Branch Board of Education became aware of the charges.

Judge Becky Daugherty also ordered Thomas to spend two years on probation after he leaves jail, to get a risk assessment within 30 days, get a mental health evaluation and follow the recommendations given. He is also ordered to pay costs of $337.

Thomas is now a Tier 1 sex offender, requiring him to register with the sheriff in the place where he lives annually for 15 years.
