Career center class opens doors for nursing careers

CANFIELD – A new class at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will open doors for nursing careers.

This year’s high school medical program, called pre-nursing and allied health, is preparing area juniors and seniors for a career in nursing and college.

“The program is new this year,” Jessica Cene, marketing and job placement coordinator, said. “Previously we had medical occupations and also health tech prep. We decided to combine these programs and expand on them since there is such a demand for it.”

The students are introduced to a wide variety of skills needed for a successful clinical health care career. The class prepares students to enter the various fields of therapeutic and diagnostic services such as nursing, nurse assisting, clinical medical assisting, dental assisting, nutrition and more.

Students in this program can become state certified as a nurse’ás aide, phlebotomy, clinical medical assisting, EMT basic and EKG technician. Allied health and pre-nursing provides opportunities for job experience and employment in health care.
