Local nurse discusses COVID conditions at Youngstown hospital

During a rare Monday press conference, Gov. Mike DeWine today invited a Youngstown-based nurse to speak about conditions at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

Lisa Burich, emergency room team leader at the Mercy Health hospital, said health care workers are “bogged down,” at capacity and are at the point where patients are being held in the emergency room for days, waiting for a bed to free up.

Burich said health care workers have an influx of COVID-19 patients, along with patients with other ailments.

When asked by DeWine if some people wait too long to seek care, and therefore present with worse symptoms by the time they are admitted, Burich said they recommend people visit the hospital as soon as they become short of breath.

This is a developing story, read Tuesday’s edition for more information from DeWine’s briefing and the state and local coronavirus numbers.
