YOUNGSTOWN — The U.S. Department of Justice has awarded $139,227 to Youngstown and $58,008 to Trumbull County to pay for public safety agency costs related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The funding can be used to “pay for (law enforcement) costs associated with the pandemic such as overtime, medical personal protective equipment, hiring, training and other expenses,” said Justin Herdman, U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Ohio.

The money to Youngstown and Trumbull County is part of a $2.3 million grant the DOJ is giving to communities in northern Ohio.

The only other locations in northern Ohio to receive funding from the program are $1,719,898 to Cleveland, $403,225 to Akron and $58,008 to Lorain County.

The funding comes from the Coronavirus Emergency Supplemental Funding Program, which allows for eligible state, local and tribal governments to support various activities related to the prevention, preparation and response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
