Virus surge continues as state adds 5.5K cases

COVID-19 cases across the state jumped an additional 5,561 cases, bringing the total number of COVID-19 infections to 1,253,198. In the past week, more than 40,000 cases were tallied. Since last week, the Ohio Department of Health reported 148 new deaths. The state is updating the number only after death certificates have been processed, usually Tuesdays and Fridays. The Ohio Department of Health on Saturday reported 6,369 new COVID-19 cases and 159 new hospitalizations. As of Saturday, 1,247,637 cases have been reported since the start of the pandemic, leading to 66,628 hospitalizations. Officials reported 6,115,303 Ohioans, or 52.32 percent of the state’s population, have started the vaccination process, an increase of 11,935 from the previous day. Virus cases exceed 6K for 3rd day

The number of COVID-19 cases in the state remains high with each of the past three days exceeding 6,000. It’s the first time since Jan. 5 to 16 that Ohio had at least three days in a row with a minimum of 6,000 COVID-19 cases. During the past 11 days, all but two exceeded 4,000 cases. Of those 11, six had more than 5,000 daily cases. The number of COVID-19 cases in Ohio increased 17.5 times in just the past seven weeks and is showing signs of only getting higher as the state exceeded 7,000 daily cases for the second day in a row. More than 7,000 COVID-19 cases reported in 1 day in Ohio

The state is experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases not seen since January. The Ohio Department of Health reported 7,102 COVID-19 cases Wednesday. It’s the first time the state exceeded 7,000 cases since 7,271 were reported Jan. 21. However, 1,021 of them are because of a backlog of cases, according to the ODH. “As the result of a laboratory reporting delay, today’s case count will include 1,021 positive COVID-19 cases from antigen testing between Aug. 15-25,” the ODH said in a statement. August has highest virus case total since January

Ohio had more COVID-19 cases in just the last 15 days of August than the three previous months combined. Overall, 91,623 cases were reported last month. Of the 31 days in August, 15 of them had daily cases exceeding 3,000. There haven’t been that many days in a month with at least 3,000 daily cases since January. Also, all but two of those 15 days with more than 3,000 cases in August were in the second half of the month.
