Community news 5-29
INTERFAITH PRAYER VIGIL: An interfaith prayer vigil will take place 1 p.m. Saturday at 2240 Hubbard Road, Youngstown. The event will be in the gravel lot north of the entrance. Take a chair, if needed. People of faith, interfaith clergy and allies will gather in prayer, song and reflection outside the Core Civic ICE prison to demand that all its detained immigrants and asylum seekers receive their due process rights, including the right to have legal and spirited counsel while detained. The vigil is being organized by the Youngstown Area Interfaith Prayer Group, the Interfaith Group Against Hate in Cleveland and the We Are the Many, We are the One coalition as an expression of their continued advocacy of the rights of immigrants.
FOOD SOVEREIGNTY INITIATIVE: The Healthy Community Partnership’s Healthy Food Action Team is excited to launch their second year of Plant Power! A Food Sovereignty Initiative. This initiative will help community members grow their own fresh foods through free plant and seed giveaways and education on growing at home.
From late May to early July, members of the Healthy Food Action Team will distribute free plants at community events in Youngstown and Warren. Plants being given away will be purchased from locally owned and operated greenhouses.
STORY TRAIL AT GREENWAY: Starting June 1, the Greenway Trailhead will have a story trail from the Lepper Library at the 0 mile marker, where children who participate can enter into a raffle for a small prize through a QR code on the last page of the story.
A separate story will be at the Leetonia Trailhead of the Greenway Trail, where children can also enter in the raffle with a different QR code on the last page of their story. Children are encouraged to participate with both books on each end of the trail. There will be different books put up in July to finish up the Summer Reading Programs.
The Story Trail at the Greenway Trail is a collaboration between the Lepper Public Library and the Leetonia Community Public Library. Watch for more information or contact the library at www.lepperlibrary.org.
VILLAGE BEAUTIFICATION: The Beautification Committee of Poland’s Town One Range One nonprofit continues its mission of enhancing the beauty of Poland Village through community tree planting, landscaping, signage and lighting projects.
As part of the America250 celebration, volunteers will gather at 1 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot near Huntington Bank to assemble white planters filled with red, white and blue flowers. The patriotic displays will help celebrate America’s 250th anniversary while adding seasonal beauty throughout the village.
Community volunteers are welcome to participate. For information, contact Kurt Hildebrand at 330-719-4168 or Kathy Miller at 330-550-5433.
LITTLE BLACK DRESSES FUNDRAISER: The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will present its annual Ladies in Little Black Dresses for Literacy fundraiser 6 p.m. Thursday at The Lake Club in Poland. This year’s event will benefit the library’s Summer Discovery program, a vital initiative designed to combat the “summer slide” — the learning loss that can occur when school is out of session. Each summer, Summer Discovery opens the door to learning, imagination and opportunity for thousands of children, teens and adults throughout the community.
Tickets are $65, which includes a buffet-style dinner. A cash bar and raffles are also available. For more information, contact Mandy Shina at mshina@libraryvisit.org or call 330-744-8636.
