SOLAR GLASSES: The Mahoning Valley Astronomical Society will set up an informational booth from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and will sell solar glasses for viewing the April 8 total solar eclipse. Glasses are $2 and are ISO approved. Locations include Newton Falls IGA, Village Sparkle in Columbiana and Sparkle in Cornersburg.

ABWA MEETING: The Mill Creek chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will meet at 6 p.m. April 9 at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. Dinner at 6:30. The cost is $18. Reservations may be made by calling Darlene at 330-755-9089 or Marylyn at 330-726-2527 by Sunday. The speaker for the evening will be Kaitlyn Budnik. She is a patient-care consultant for Accudose Pharmacy. The public is welcome.

PRESS CLUB SCHOLARSHIPS: The Youngstown Press Club is seeking applications for two $2,000 scholarships it will award this year. The application deadline is Monday.

The awards will go to college juniors or seniors residing in Trumbull, Mahoning, Columbiana, Mercer or Lawrence counties, who are majoring in journalism or a related field.

Applicants must submit proof of a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher; be entering their junior or senior year in the 2024-25 academic year; submit at least two writing or broadcast samples.

The scholarships are funded by the Frank and Pearl Gelbman Foundation and by club membership dues, proceeds from club events and direct donations from individuals and the club’s corporate sponsors.

AAUW TO MEET: The American Association of University Women of Youngstown will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Main Mahoning County Library, 305 Wick Ave., Room 205. Members will be discussing the historical perspective of women in education, and show an excerpt from a video shared by the League of Women Voters during one of its recent events. This event is free and open to all interested community members.

VETERANS OF THE VALLEY: The Mahoning County Board of Developmental Disabilities will present the 10th annual Veterans of the Valley presentation 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, 764 Fifth St., Struthers. All veterans of military service, past and present, are welcome.

SPRING BREAK CAMP: The Jewish Community Center of Youngstown will host a spring break camp for children in kindergarten to fifth grade 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday and April 1 to 5. SPRING CLEANUP: Girard City Cemetery is hosting spring cleanup through the end of March for removing Christmas decorations from the graves. After April 1, employees will remove items.

MASTER GARDENER: Girard Free Library will host Trumbull County Master Gardener Wanda Thomas with tips on gardening at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

ECLIPSE PROGRAM: The Girard Free Library will host a program on the solar eclipse 6 p.m. Tuesday. Speaker Doug Fowler, former adjunct professor of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Youngstown State University, will shine a light on the rare phenomenon. People can learn the science behind the eclipse. Registration is required.

PLANETARIUM SPEAKER: Potential Development School, 2400 Market St., will have guest speaker Curt Spivey, planetarium engineer at Youngstown State University’s Ward Beecher Planetarium, at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Spivey will explain the science behind the eclipse and educate students on safe viewing.

NEWCOMERS TO MEET: Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will have its luncheon meeting at noon Wednesday at Donavito’s, 139 S. Bridge St., Struthers. The speaker will be Vince Bevacqua from Family Tech Connect, a free service to seniors in-home coaching with a program that connects seniors and family to the rest of the world by helping them with technology such as smartphones, tablets, and computers.

YAPA SCHOLARSHIPS: The Youngstown Alumnae Panhellenic Association will offer a Panhellenic scholarship for the 2024-25 school year to an undergraduate who is an active member of a National Panhellenic Conference organization and who is a resident from Mahoning, Trumbull or Columbiana counties. SOLAR ECLIPSE 101: Youngstown State University will present its “Alumni Lecture Series: Solar Eclipse 101” 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Beeghly Hall, McKay Auditorium. The lecture will help people prepare for the upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8. Learn about the science behind the eclipse, the significance of this once-in-a-lifetime event, the best places to see it and how to view the event safely.

The talk will be given by YSU astronomy professor Dr. Patrick Durrell. The event is free, but reservations are required by today.

EASTER EGG HUNT: New Springfield Church of God, 3649 E. Garfield Road, will host an Easter egg hunt at 10 a.m. Saturday.

SUBMARINE USE DISCUSSED: Douglas Theobald will speak about submarine use during the Cold War when the World War II Heritage Group meets at 6:15 p.m. today at A La Carte Catering in Canfield.

Theobald’s talk will follow a buffet dinner for which reservations are needed through David Frank at 330-757-0515.

During the height of the Cold War, submarine war was waged across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans in tracking Soviet nuclear subs.

Theobald is serving as Liberty fire chief, while also serving as a pastor in Struthers.

AI IN MEDIA: Nikita Roy, a data scientist and expert on the role of artificial intelligence in journalism, will address a Youngstown Press Club luncheon Thursday. “How AI is Changing the Media Landscape” will be her topic. The event will begin at noon at the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County’s main branch, 305 Wick Ave.

Roy is host of the globally-acclaimed Newsroom Robots podcast.

She is a Knight Fellow at the International Center for Journalists and has been a part of its News Innovation Lab and the Google News Initiative Startup Lab.

BINGO FUNDRAISER: Bingo for Ukraine will be at 6:45 p.m. each Wednesday in March at SS. Peter and Paul Church,1025 N. Belle Vista Ave., Youngstown. There will be food and prizes. All proceeds from the bingo will help with humanitraian aid for the Ukraine.

BLOCK WATCH: The Girard block watch for the city’s second and third wards will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Girard Free Library community room. Guest speaker will be Girard fire Chief James Petruzzi.

SOCIETY TOUR: The Poland Historical Society is offering tours of the historic Poland Presbyterian Church at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The church is located at 2 Poland Manor and was built in 1897. The tour will include the parish house, education unit and historical main building.

DRUMMING EVENT: The Unity Church Centre, 1226 Naylor Lloyd Road, will host Drums and Yums at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday with a drumming circle to celebrate the Vernal Equinox. The drumming will be led by Dan Susany. The event is free, but donations will be accepted. For questions, call 330-539-0122.

OPEN HOUSE: Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will host an open house at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the school on Palmyra Road, Canfield. There will be technical training tours for welding, automotive, technology, medical assisting and emergency medical technician. Labs will be open for tours. LEGO NIGHT: Girard Free Library will host a LEGO Night at 6 p.m. today. The library will provide the LEGOs. Call to reserve a spot.

STEAM NIGHT: The Girard City School District will host the annual Family STEAM Night 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Girard High School, 1244 Shannon Road. This year’s theme is “Total Eclipse of the Arts.” Presentations and activities suitable for all ages will be available.

CEMETERY CLEANUP: Tod Homestead Cemetery’s annual cleanup will begin Friday. All decorations on graves, including solar lights and artificial decorations in cemetery vases, will be removed. Anyone wishing to recover their decorations must do so before Friday.

SETON III: The luncheon meeting of Seton III will be at noon Thursday at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. Helen Scharrer will lead the prayer. The program will be Whitehouse Fruit Farm presenting all about blueberry donuts and more. Hostesses will be Mary Jo Wright, Catherine Fleming and Margie Rochford.

PLAY AT CRESTVIEW: The Crestview Theatre Program presents “Little Shop of Horrors” at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Little Shop of Horrors is a horror comedy rock musical with music by Alan Menken and lyrics and book by Howard Ashman. The musical is loosely based on the low-budget 1960 comedy film “The Little Shop of Horrors.”

Ticket prices are $12 for adults and $10 for students and senior citizens.

BEE KEEPERS: The Columbiana and Mahoning County Beekeepers Association will meet at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Austintown Senior Center, 112 Westchester Drive. There will be discussion on bee management. Lunch is at 1 p.m. and the meeting begins at 2 p.m.

FRIENDS OF RIVER: The Friends of the Mahoning River will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, 305 Wick Ave., Youngstown. This will be the quarterly general membership meeting. There will be a presentation on stormwater pollution management and healthy watersheds.

SPRING CLEANUP: Lake Park Cemetery, 1459 E. Midlothian Blvd., Youngstown, will host its annual spring cleanup beginning Friday. Anyone wanting to keep decorations need to remove them by Friday.

LIBRARY FRIENDS: The Friends of the Girard Free Library will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday. Prizes will be awarded to first-, second- and third- place in the leprechaun search in the city. Funds raised will support various activities at the library.

STUDENTS SHARE DISPLAY: Lisbon Montessori Students are sharing this month’s display collection at the Lepper Library in Lisbon.

The students are sharing their creations from the Tiny Art Show that was held in February. Each artist shares two pieces of work; one is a 3D picture and the second is a self-portrait. There is a biography beside each artist’s display.
