HALLOWEEN IN JACKSON: The Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Department will hold a “grab and go” trick or treat 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the fire department, 229 N. Salem-Warren Road. Families can drive through or walk through to get treats.

The North Jackson Citizens’ Association will hold a Halloween Fest from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the township administration building, 10613 Mahoning Ave. Families can enjoy trick or treating inside.

TRI-COUNTY HEART BALL: The American Heart Association, the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, will host Its annual Heart of Tri-County Heart Ball on Thursday at the Eastwood Event Centre in Niles. The celebration is the culmination of the association’s yearlong work through the Heart of Tri-County campaign that is focused on funding research, education, and raising critical funds to support the lifesaving work of the organization. The Signature Sponsors of this year’s Tri-County Heart Ball are Premier Bank and Cafaro Foundation.

Co-chairs of this year’s Heart Ball are Mark Mediate of Premier Bank and Lisa Mariotti of Grainger who said yes to leading this campaign because of their personal connection to heart disease.

More than 126,000 people in the tri-county area have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. Left undetected, or uncontrolled, high blood pressure can lead to several health issues including heart attacks and stroke.

The Heart of Tri-County Heart Ball will be hosted by WFMJ’s Derek Steyer. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with a cocktail hour and silent auction. A formal dinner and program will begin at 7 p.m. followed by a live auction and Open Your Heart special appeal.

HAUNTED CAR WASH: Coates Car Care will be hosting their third annual Halloween Haunted Car Wash 7 to 10 p.m. today and Friday at their new Boardman location only, 6410 South Ave., Boardman. Due to construction on state Route 46, Coates Howland will not have a Haunted Car Wash this year.

With a $20 donation, each patron will receive an Epic Car Wash and the first 100 patrons each night receive a Halloween treat bag with goodies from area sponsors.

All donations will benefit the Melina Michelle Edenfield Foundation to help find a cure for pediatric brain tumors.

QUARTER AUCTION: The Knights of Columbus Assembly 2596, Msgr. John J. Lettau Assembly co-sponsored with Christ Our Savior Council 4471, is holding a quarter auction Saturday at St. Nicholas Church hall in Struthers. Doors open at 5 p.m. The auction starts at 6:30. HOPE IN MOTION: Join state and local mental health and community leaders for the kickoff of the Help Network’s Hope In Motion campaign, 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Covelli Centre parking lot, Youngstown. The campaign goal is to create awareness of the new national 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline and demonstrate support of prevention efforts in the Valley.

Help Network of Northeast Ohio administers and answers the 988 line in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Ashtabula counties.

The event features the first public viewing of a display across the side of a WRTA bus.

The display and the WRTA bus will travel the Mahoning Valley carrying the message that 988 is the number to call.

The Help Network Hope In Motion campaign is funded by a state grant and local supporters, including the Ross Griffin Memorial Foundation, Adsposure and WRTA.

PURPLE PINKIE DOUGHNUTS: Members of Rotary District 6650 around the region are joining other Rotary clubs around the nation to host the Purple Pinkie Donut Project today, a joint fundraiser in celebration of World Polio Day.

The 46 clubs and their high school and college affiliates are selling made-from-scratch long john / cream stick doughnuts, topped with a dab of purple icing. This represents the purple paint that is placed on children’s pinkie fingers in developing countries after they receive the polio vaccine.

For every $20 dozen sold, a $9 donation will be made to Rotary International’s Polio Plus initiative. The donation is then eligible for various matching funds programs.

Launched in Tennessee in 2018, this is the first time an Ohio Rotary District has adopted the program.

FAMILY WALK AND RUN: The Walnut Grove, 8800 Columbiana-Canfield Road, will hold a Family Walk, Run and Roll 9 a.m. Sunday. The inaugural all-abilities event fun run and walk will have proceeds helping to purchase the area’s only public wheelchair swing and make play equipment improvement. Donations are $20 per individual and $50 for family of four. There will be different activities including crafts and costume contest.

SPRUCE TREE WANTED: The city of Youngstown’s Department of Parks and Recreation is looking for a spruce tree that would be suitable for the annual Christmas tree to be located on downtown Youngstown’s Central Square.

The removal of the tree will be of no cost to you. It will be removed by the City Forester and an experienced crew. The department will also refurbish the area where the tree is taken from shortly after removal. Also, if your tree is chosen, an engraved plaque will be awarded to you at the annual Christmas tree lighting Dec. 1.

POST MEETING: The Hubbard American Legion Post 51 will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, in the Social Hall of the First Presbyterian Church, 22 Westview Ave., Hubbard.

Members will discuss arrangements for the Annual Veterans Day Dinner to be held on Nov. 10.

WORLD WAR II GROUP: William FB Vodrey will be the guest speaker for the World War II Heritage Society, which meets 6:15 p.m. Wednesday at A La Carte Catering in Canfield. Registration is needed by calling David at 330-757-0515. Vodrey’s presentation will be “Truman and the Atom Bomb” based on the dilemma, debate and politics of dropping such a weapon. Vodrey, of East Liverpool, graduated with honors from Oberlin College and serves as a judge in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court. He has been interested in presidential and military history for many years. He was a former Civil War reenactor with the 51st Ohio Infantry.

PUMPKIN WALK: Mill Creek MetroParks will hold a pumpkin walk from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Fellows Riverside Gardens, 123 McKinley Ave., Youngstown. The free event is open to the public. There will be children’s activities and live entertainment.

Pumpkin carving will be 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, with finished pumpkins to be featured at the walk. The outdoor carving area will be located in the back north section of the parking lot at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Pumpkins and carving tools will be provided.

AUXILIARY TO CELEBRATE 90 YEARS: The St. Elizabeth Auxiliary is celebrating 90 years of service this year with a special luncheon at noon, Monday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Center, 4490 Norquest Blvd., Austintown, in the parish center located behind the church and school.

Invited guests will be administrative officials who support the organization.

Members will be given a memento gift donated by the foundation and share memories of the services provided to patients and staff at the Youngstown and Boardman hospitals.

St. Elizabeth Auxiliary has some 70 members. The group raises funds to support projects at the two hospitals through book, jewelry and shoe / uniform sales. The auxiliary also provides volunteers for the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center, which it has supported since its inception. Other projects include hand knitted / crocheted baby blankets for newborns in the St. E’s Boardman maternity department and pillows for abdominal post-surgery patients at both hospitals.

PIONEER DAY: The Friends of Beaver Creek State Park will be holding its 47th annual Pioneer Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Pioneer Village in Beaver Creek State Park.

The event features vendors and crafters, homemade food and desserts, music, Kidz Zone and an assortment of goods for sale in the trading post.

All the buildings in Pioneer Village will be open and many will be manned for demonstrations of blacksmithing, quilting, teaching in a one-room school and more. Gaston’s Mill will be operating so visitors can watch how grain was ground into flour and corn meal in the 1800s.

There is no charge for admission or parking.

OPEN HOUSE: The Moss Ancestral Home and the Mineral Ridge Historical Society will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. They are located at 1499 and 1476 Burnett St.

The Moss Ancestral Home is an 1830’s Pennsylvania Bank-style home and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The society is filled with artifacts and pictures from the Mineral Ridge area.

VOLUNTEER HELP: The Oak Hill Cemetery volunteer research team is in need of volunteers to help with surveys. Volunteers can help the computer team and research team. For information, call Steffon at 330-301-7365.

LEARNING EXPERIENCE: The Brigade of the American Revolution and Living Historians are presenting a school learning program from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 13, based on America’s fight for freedom from Britain and living on the 18th century frontier.

Each program will be approximately 30 minutes and will give the students an opportunity to step back into the 18th century. They will hear and talk with the people on how soldiers and pioneers lived and worked in the time when the country was young. Several of the sessions will incorporate hands-on opportunities.

All activities are subject to re-enactor availability.

Check in starts at 9 a.m. Cost is $5 per student, but no cost for adult supervisors.
