PARADE, LIGHTS, FLEA: The City of Youngstown, Youngstown CityScape, the Downtown Youngstown Partnership and title sponsor Premier Bank will present this year’s Holiday Parade, Light-up Night and Flea on Phelps from 4 to 8 p.m. Dec 2 on Central Square.

Activities and events will include vendors at the Flea on Phelps; parade beginning at 6 p.m.; and the Christmas tree lighting will begin immediately following the parade.

There will be lots of festivities, and all the action on the grandstand is sponsored by Sweeney Buick GMC. There will be pictures with Santa, sponsored by SPRUCE, and commemorative mugs, sponsored by PLATT Insurance with drink specials to fill them all over town.

CHRISTMAS ON THE FARM: Molnar Farms, 3115 E. Western Reserve Road, Poland, is hosting Christmas on the Farm, a craft and gift market featuring more than 20 local vendors with handmade items, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

There is no charge to attend. Vendors sell a range of handcrafted items, tasty treats and specialty holiday decor.

MCDONALD TREE LIGHTING: The McDonald village annual tree lighting will be 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the municipal building off Ohio Avenue. There will be caroling, craft activities for children, hayrides and refreshments at the park gazebo.

WINTER GREENERY SALE: CityScape is hosting its second annual Winter Greenery Sale 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 1 and 3, at CityScape at Briel’s greenhouse, 23 S. Belle Vista Ave., Youngstown.

CityScape’s greenhouse will have a wide selection of wreaths, garland, swags and greenery. There will be additional Youngstown items for sale, including notecards and T-shirts. Pre-orders may be made at www.youngstowncityscape.org/greenery.

Founded in 1998, Youngstown CityScape is a nonprofit community development organization dedicated to the revitalization of the greater downtown Youngstown area.

GIRARD NOTIFICATION SYSTEM: The city of Girard, in cooperation with the Trumbull County Emergency Management Agency, has subscribed to the wireless emergency notification system. Information will be provided by 4th Ward Councilman Thomas Grumley Saturday morning at the Girard Multi-Generational Center on Trumbull Avenue.

Signing up will give residents a way to receive alerts, emergency or nonemergency, that may be put out by city officials. People can choose the alerts that they would like to receive.

FOUNDATION AWARDS GRANTS: Children’s Mental Health Circle of Friends Foundation President Greg Cvetovic announced $54,000 in grants that were awarded to area agencies:

• Akron Children’s Hospital, $7,000 to support its in-school teacher mentoring in working with children dealing with trauma;

• Helms Foundation, $7,000 to support its training of mental health counselors in art therapy;

• Alta Behavioral Healthcare, $20,000 for its intensive home-based counseling and $20,000 for its therapeutic recreational day camp at Camp Challenge.

These organizations help the Friends Foundation find the 15 out of 20 children in need of mental health services but who otherwise never receive it, Cvetovic said.

GARDEN CLUB VISIT: Members of the Poland Trailwood Gardeners Club visited the Poland Presbyterian Preschool in October to present a lesson on flower bulbs and work with the children as they each planted a bulb. The project was funded through a grant offered by the Garden Forum of the Greater Youngstown Area. The children now are waiting for spring.

SHOP AND SKATE: Lisbon Area Chamber of Commerce will present Shop & Skate at the Square from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Free ice skating will take place in the Columbiana County Courthouse parking lot. Skates are included.

In addition to ice skating, vendors will set up inside and along the sidewalks of the Shops on Park Avenue, and food trucks will be parked alongside the skating rink.

HOUSE OF HOSPITALITY: The Dorothy Day House of Hospitality, located at 620 Belmont Ave., will present a roundtable conversation with Penny Wells, director of Mahoning Valley Sojourn to the Past. FALL OPEN HOUSE: Model trains of all shapes and sizes will be available at the Youngstown Model Railroad Association’s Fall Open House noon until 6 p.m. Dec. 3, 4 and 10, 11. The club is located at the corner of Raccoon Road and Four Mile Run Road in Austintown.

The Youngstown Model Railroad Association is one of the few clubs in the country that has two complete displays: “O” scale and the smaller”HO.” Both extensive layouts feature more than 100 scale miles of track each.

The “HO” layout is currently completing the steel mill complex, and its track work along with several upgrades to lighting and buildings in the city and industrial park areas.

The “O” scale layout is currently undergoing a major renovation as the locomotive roundhouse area is being completely redone and several scenery upgrades are being done on the entire layout.

Entrance cost is $5 per person. Children 11 and under with an adult are free.

MOWER WINTERIZATION: The Girard High School FIRST Robotics team, known as the RoboCats, will winterize push lawn mowers Dec. 3 at Girard High School’s back parking lot, 1244 Shannon Road, for $40 per mower. Pickup and delivery also will be available for $55.

The RoboCats will be cleaning mowers, changing the oil, sharpening and balancing the blades, filling the gas tanks, and adding fuel stabilizer. Spark plugs will be changed if provided by the customer.

Those interested can drop their mowers off between 8 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The mower will be available for pickup the same day.

Customers in Girard only can call in advance to schedule Friday pickup and Sunday delivery for a cost of $55. Contact Ashraf Hadi at 330-545-5431, Ext. 130, to schedule.

The program benefits the Girard FIRST Robotics, middle school FIRST LEGO League, and junior high FIRST Tech Challenge teams sponsored by Aptiv.

SNOWFLAKE BALL: The USA Dance Youngstown Warren Chapter 2015 Snowflake Ball will be 5 to 10 p.m. Dec. 3 at the Historic Avon Oaks Ballroom, 1401 N. State St., Girard. The Snowflake Ball is Rated “No. 4 Social Dance Event in the Country!” by American Dancer Magazine.

Enjoy a night out, playing for purses by the designer brands, including Kate Spade, Coach and Michael Kors.

CLASS CRAFT SHOW: The Annual Canfield High School Senior Class Craft Show will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 3, at the high school. Two hundred vendors will set up shop, and students from the Class of 2023 will be assisting with the event.

Parking and admission are free. In addition to the craft show, concessions and a basket auction will be available.

LIGHTING OF THE VILLAGE: For the 14th consecutive year, the village of Poland will celebrate the Christmas season with the Lighting of the Village event at 5 p.m. Dec. 3. This is a free event sponsored by the Poland Junior Women’s Club and community organizations of Poland. The event begins with activities at the Poland Village Hall. Featured will be holiday carols, cookies and cocoa, horse-drawn carriage rides (carriage rides are free; sign up early), Santa’s arrival in a firetruck, and the lighting of the village Christmas tree and decorations.

LIONS CHRISTMAS: The Youngstown Lions Club will host its 100th annual Christmas party for visually impaired and special needs students at 11 a.m. Dec. 6 at the Saxon Club, 710 S. Meridian Road, Youngstown.

Approximately 100 students from the Youngstown City Schools, Leonard Kirtz, Southside Academy and individuals from Goodwill Industries will be treated to lunch, music and presents from Santa.

The Youngstown Lions Club has been making the holidays brighter through this annual tradition for a century. The Christmas party is the club’s largest event, made possible by its Turtle Derby fundraiser held each summer.

TURKEY TROT TO MISSION: Last year, over 50 local bikers participated in a Turkey Trot to help feed the less fortunate, the homeless and local veteran families. The event took place recently starting at American Legion Post 472, 323 E. Indianola Ave. Youngstown. Bikers went to a local grocery store to purchase turkeys and fixings, and then rode to the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley to deliver the food.

ROBINSON HONORED: The Mahoning County Mental Health and Recovery Board awarded Sean Robinson, Director of Housing at Meridian HealthCare, the Front-Line Staff of the Year Award to honor a staff member who goes above and beyond for their clients.

Robinson has served as Meridian’s Director of Housing for the last six years and oversees all of Meridian HealthCare’s seven housing facilities and programs. The MCMHRB honored this year’s Mental Health and Recovery Award winners at its annual recognition luncheon Sept. 23.

September was National Recovery Month and National Suicide Prevention Month.

IMPACT WORK: Hubbard High School student Isabella Williams, 15, is featured in Rustic Spirit Spotlights for her impact work. She is planning a fundraiser basketball game for Potential Development, a nonprofit charter school that serves students with autism. Along with fundraising, she aims to raise autism awareness and allow them to have a normal high school experience that includes sports. Isabella also volunteers and participates in events with the Down Syndrome Association and Brookfield Township’s police department.

PARK DIRECTOR: Retired Pioneer Park Director Dan Slagle will talk about his career and the development of Boardman Park in a Boardman Historical Society program at 10 a.m. Nov. 12.

Slagle oversaw the development of a small plot of land donated in 1947 into the 227-acre “Green Oasis” it is today. Slagle led construction projects for facilities and the acquisition of land in a career that spanned 50 years.
