NEW MIDDLETOWN — Springfield Local Schools Superintendent Tom Yazvac was named the Ohio Music Education Association’s 2020 Outstanding School Administrator of the Year.

He was presented with the 2020 Outstanding School Administrator of the Year Award last month at the OMEA Professional Development Conference.

Yazvac was nominated by the district’s music teachers for his support of the music programs at all grade levels, both past and present. School staff, community members, and parents all wrote nomination letters.

One parent wrote: “Mr. Yazvac has created a culture where music education is cherished and valued. His support of the music program is evident in his presence at all events — concerts, fine arts nights, honors competitions, solo and ensemble, drama productions, band nights, etc. Mr. Yazvac has created balanced music programs from kindergarten to 12th grade, with numerous opportunities for students to tap into their musical potential”

Zonda Hasse, Springfield Local School Board member and past board president, also noted Yazvac’s dedication to the arts in her nomination letter: “He shares his love and professional understanding of music with our school family. He consistently goes the ‘extra mile’ to give strong support for the music and the arts programs for our students.”

Anthony Albanese, Springfield Local Elementary principal, wrote about Yazvac making sure elementary students are able to experience music.

“With his support, the elementary school has been able to purchase a variety of non-pitched percussion instruments, two xylophones, a variety of books, music, and student learning aids, such as puppets,” added Rebecca Nerone, elementary music teacher. “These items allow for my classroom to be transformed into a magical place for learning music.”
