Program to look at mushrooms

AUDUBON SOCIETY HOSTS AUTHOR: The Audubon Society Mahoning Valley will host a program, “Mushrooms with Walt” 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Canfield Library. Walt Sturgeon of East Palestine enjoys nature and participates in several Christmas Bird Counts every year. Sturgeon will present the myriad colors, forms and habitats of native macro fungi, both edible and toxic. He will also cover folklore and show examples of bioluminescent species, insectivorous fungi and hallucinogenic mushrooms. Sturgeon is a trustee and longtime member of the Ohio Mushroom Society and has authored several books.

HOLIDAY TREE RAFFLE: Community members can enter to win their favorite holiday trees when Salem Regional Medical Center’s Auxiliary hosts its annual Holiday Tree Raffle beginning Dec. 5.

All of the trees have been uniquely decorated by members of the SRMC family and will be displayed in the hospital’s cafeteria, where raffle tickets will be available for $1 each or six for $5. Tickets will be sold 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 to 6 p.m. Dec. 5; 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 6; and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 9 to 11. On Dec. 12, tickets may be purchased in the cafeteria 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.

In addition to cafeteria ticket sales, the public can also purchase tickets in SRMC’s Look Nook Gift Shop during the raffle 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

Winners will be announced Dec. 12, and raffle proceeds will be used to assist the Auxiliary in enhancing patient care and comfort at SRMC. For information, call SRMC’s Development Office at 330-337-2883.

OH! WOW HOLIDAY SEASON: The OH WOW! The Roger and Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science and Technology will be closed Thursday and will reopen 9 a.m. Friday. First person through the door will receive a free five-person membership.

OH WOW! will be celebrating this year’s Youngstown Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting Ceremony from 4 to 7 p.m. Dec. 6 with free admission.
