UPDATE: No injuries after gun fired at Sam’s Club

BOARDMAN — There were no injuries after a child fired a gun Saturday morning at Sam’s Club in the township.

According to the Boardman Police Department, a child reached into his mother’s purse while in the checkout line when the gun went off.

At 10:52 a.m., officers were dispatched to the store for the report of a juvenile who fired one round inside the building, with one or two employees struck.

Officers responded and learned the 7-year-old boy retrieved his mother’s 9mm Ruger semiauto handgun while she was distracted, police Chief Todd Werth confirmed.

The child was able to remove the safety, firing one round.

Employees were not directly struck by the round, and sustained minor welts. The child received a minor “slide bite” and tinnitus in his ear.

The mother, from Youngstown, does have a valid carry concealed weapon license.

All parties were checked by an ambulance crew and Boardman Fire Department personnel.

No charges have been filed, Werth said, but the department will confer with the Mahoning County Prosecutor’s office to determine if further action will be taken.
