Derbytown Chorus keeps a Warren tradition alive

The name of the ensemble is different, but the tradition of holiday songs in four-part, barbershop-style harmonies that started with the Stephen Foster Chorus continues in Warren. Akron’s Derbytown Chorus will perform a Christmas concert Sunday at Christ Episcopal Church. When the Stephen Foster Chorus disbanded in 2021 after 75 years, members of the Akron chorus joined them for the final performance to supplement its dwindling ranks. Hometown Holidays fills Courthouse Square on Saturday

Downtown Warren will get into the seasonal spirit on Saturday with its annual Hometown Holidays celebration and tree lighting ceremony. Activities at Courthouse Square include carriage rides, an ice sculpting demonstration, music by DJ Boogie Entertainment and costumed Grinch, Olaf and Bluey characters. Christmas favorites will get a big band approach with Jingle Bell Swing on Friday. Singer Helen Welch will be backed by the Big Band Sound of Packard, directed by Daniel Carioti, for the annual concert. Born in England, Welch is a frequent guest vocalist with the W.D. Packard Concert Band and its big band.
