JCC gallery features Tree of Life exhibition
Submitted photo / John Halpern “Lessons from the Tree of Life: Lighting the Path Forward” features items left outside the Tree of Life synagogue or mailed to Pittsburgh following a mass shooting in 2018 that killed 11 people.
A traveling exhibition created after the 2018 Tree of Life synagogue shooting in 2018 opens Tuesday at the Thomases Family Endowment of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation Art Gallery.
Following the Oct. 27, 2018, attack that resulted in 11 deaths, more than 10,000 items were left outside the Tree of Life building or mailed to Pittsburgh after the attack. “Lessons from the Tree of Life: Lighting the Path Forward” features some of those items and challenges visitors to reflect on antisemitism’s impact in America and inspire action toward a future rooted in resilience and understanding.
The exhibition was created by the Rauh Jewish History Program and Archives at the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh.
It will be on display through April 9 in the gallery at the Jewish Community Center of Youngstown, 505 Gypsy Lane.
An opening reception at 7 p.m. Tuesday will include a talk by Scott Miller, academic adviser for Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life memorial project and curator of the exhibition. He will reflect on the 2018 synagogue shooting, the deadliest antisemitic attack in United States history, and consider the current rise in antisemitism worldwide. He also will discuss how the exhibition challenges hate while reimagining a rebuilt Tree of Life as a symbol of Jewish resilience, remembrance and shared humanity. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Additional programming in conjunction with the show includes an open studio from 5 to 7 p.m. March 19, where participants will create paper cranes to add to the community senbazuru, a Japanese tradition, while reflecting on a wish for hope, peace and healing for the world today.
At a REACH event from 2 to 3 p.m. March 22, family members and survivors of the 2018 attack will share personal reflections and stories of facing antisemitism while also experiencing deep solidarity.
Advance registration is required for the reception and the REACH event by emailing bwilson@jewishyoungstown.org.
