Lovin’ Spoonful to play WCMA concert

The Warren Civic Music Association will serve up a Spoonful of ’60s hits with its next concert.

Performing Monday will be the Lovin’ Spoonful. Original bass and keyboard player Steve Boone is joined in the current lineup by Bill Cinque, Jeff Alan Ross, Rob Bonfiglio and Mike Arturi.

Formed in Greenwich Village, N.Y., the band had a top 10 hit with its first single, “Do You Believe in Magic?,” and it topped the charts with “Summer in the City.” In a three-year span, the group had a string of radio hits that included “Daydream,” “Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind?,” “Rain on the Roof” and “Nashville Cats.”

During that run, the Lovin’ Spoonful appeared on such television programs as “The Ed Sullivan Show,” “Hullabaloo” and “Shindig.”

Boone published a memoir about his career called “Hotter Than a Matchhead.” In an interview with The Big Takeover while promoting the book, Boone described himself as his own worst critic and that he failed to take credit for his contributions to the band’s accomplishments.

“One of the things that the band labored under was that it was “John Sebastian and three sidemen comprised the Lovin’ Spoonful,'” he said. “I’m not diminishing John one iota, but the songs that I contributed to (“Summer In The City.” “Butchie’s Tune,” “Forever”) were far more successful than just being album cuts. I’ve had people come up and say, “Wow Steve, I didn’t even know that you wrote.” Some of that was the fault of our management, and the record label.”

The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.

The concert starts at 7 p.m. at Packard Music Hall, 1703 Mahoning Ave NW, Warren: Warren. Tickets are $45 and are available at the Packard box office and through Ticketmaster.

Starting at $3.23/week.
