Steel museum displays Hahn’s photomontages

“Grit/Glow” opens today at the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry & Labor.

The large-scale photomontage exhibit by Richard Hahn explores the duality of beauty and adversity that is part of the city’s industrial history.

Many of the photos were taken while Hahn worked as a marketing consultant for manufacturing clients. The historical images and artifacts were captured at the steel museum.

The 15 works in the exhibit juxtapose the warmth of what were once Youngstown’s vivid midnight orange skies with the stark realities of industry.

According to the artist, “My first childhood memories of Youngstown were of the pulsating orange glow reflecting off the clouds. It wasn’t until years later that I learned that those skies signaled prosperity and stability for the community.”

An opening reception is planned from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the museum, 151 W. Wood St., Youngstown.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $7 for adults, $6 for senior citizens, $3 for students and free for children 5 and younger. For more information, go to www.yhcil.org or call 330-941-1314.
