Twilight starts its summer season with ‘Comedy of Errors’
David Grohl Alley may have been named for someone who’s spent most of his life on concert stages, but this weekend it will serve as a theatrical stage.
Twilight Theatre will stage William Shakespeare’s “The Comedy of Errors” for three performances in the alley outside of Modern Methods Brewing Company.
This is the third year that Twilight, founded by Joe Soriano, is bringing Shakespeare to downtown Warren. It staged “Romeo & Juliet” at Darlene Lounge in 2023, and the comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” was presented in the alley last year.
“‘Comedy of Errors’ is actually my favorite Shakespearean comedy,” Soriano said. “I feel it’s one of the most accessible for modern audiences. There’s a lot of slapstick humor, and so much of that humor that Shakespeare wrote is still funny today.”
The plot involves two sets of identical twins who were separated at birth, and the comedy ensues from the confusion when one of the twins and their slave go in search of the others.
The cast includes Kathleen Bachtel, Emelia Sherin, Gwendolyn Baker, Sam Ost, Conner Mast, Xaverie Baker, Vic Heartherson, Jess Gray, Cait McNeal, Angela Huff, Jane Plishka, Tyson Sebree and Michael Porter.
Twilight often uses non-traditional casting for its productions, and “Comedy” is no exception. Both the twin “brothers” and the twin slaves are played by women. Soriano said the casting was driven by those who auditioned rather than an advance plan to switch the genders.
“Originally, I sort of had two other twins, I wouldn’t say precasted, but they were in our ‘Midsummer’ last year,” he said.
“Unfortunately, both had very good life opportunities, but they had to move out of the area, which left me to find two sets of twins. This was actually one that I was like,’ I don’t think I’m doing anything too off the cuff with it’, but I’m so delighted with who came out for auditions and the story we get to tell.”
Twilight will do two productions this summer with Cait McNeal directing “The Tempest’ in August.
“That is one of Shakespeare’s most popular and original works,” Soriano said. “A lot of his other works, you can tell that he borrowed from this or that, but ‘The Tempest’ is one that’s most from his mind. And we are having a female lead in that. Usually Prospero is male, and there are a lot of elements there that kind of fold in by having a mother figure instead of a father figure.”
Twilight staged “Comedy of Errors” last weekend in Kent, although rain halted one of the performances. The play will be staged in the portion of David Grohl Alley that is covered, so weather shouldn’t be a factor. Those attending are encouraged to bring their own chairs.
Soriano said Modern Methods has been very accommodating to the theater troupe, but the ultimate goal is to find a permanent home.
“We would love to get a permanent space and go year round, and I don’t need to direct every show when we do that,” Soriano said.
“Moving forward, we are planning on two shows, and I’m probably directing one, and then somebody else will be directing the other.”
