Tree planting planned in Burbank Park

A community tree planting event starts at 10 a.m. Friday at Burbank Park, 3252 Elm Hill Drive NW, Warren, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Arbor Day.

It is organized by the Warren City Arbor Commission, Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership and Trumbull Soil and Water Conservation District. The commission aims to prioritize the planting and maintenance of trees as a key part of Warren’s sustainability and beautification efforts.

Thirty trees will be planted. Volunteers are welcome, and supplies and tools will be provided.

Library program to explore historic homes

A program on the historic homes of Warren is scheduled at 5 p.m. May 1 at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library Liberty Branch, 415 Churchill-Hubbard Road.

Local historian Marcia Levy will highlight some of the city’s oldest houses in the illustrated presentation.

Program spotlights Braceville’s Ted Toles

The Trumbull County Historical Society’s Sunday Speaker Series will feature a program on Braceville native and Negro League baseball player Ted Toles Jr.

Toles, who died in 2016 at age 90, was both a pitcher and an outfielder during his career, which included stints with the Pittsburgh Crawfords, Cleveland Buckeyes and other Negro League teams and in the minor league systems of the Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees and Philadelphia Athletics after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier.

Ted and Nelson Toles of the Braceville Community Foundation will talk about his life and career at 2 p.m. at the future home of the Museum of Science Fiction and Fantasy Arts, 410 Main Ave. SW, Warren. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.

Press Club hosts WordWrite founder

The president of Pittsburgh-based communications company WordWrite will be the guest speaker for a Youngstown Press Club luncheon on May 15.

Paul Furiga will talk about the power of storytelling in communication and branding in a program titled “Unleashing Your Most Potent Communication Asset: Your Capital S Story.”

Before moving into public relations, he spent 20 years in journalism, including the last four as editor of the Pittsburgh Business Times.

The luncheon starts at noon at the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry & Labor, 151 W. Wood St. The cost is $30 for press club members and $35 for non-members, and the deadline for registration is May 7 at youngstownpressclub.com.

YSU hosts lecture on school voucher, culture wars

Josh Cowen, a professor of education policy at Michigan State University, will speak on “School Vouchers, Culture Wars, and Defending the Public Good” at 12:30 p.m., Tuesday at Youngstown State University.

His talk will cover a brief history of school vouchers, a discussion of what the current research says about their effects on kids and families, and an explanation of how vouchers are part of the current historical and political moment.

The program will be in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center, and admission is free.

Millennial Theatre Company schedules ‘Dreamcoat’ auditions

Millennial Theatre Company will have auditions April 26 and 28 for its summer production of the Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.”

Auditions for dancers ages 15 and older are scheduled from noon to 3 p.m. April 26.

Auditions for singers and actors (leads and ensemble ages 16 and older as well as youth ensemble for children ages 7 and older) will run from 6 to 9 p.m. April 28.

Stambaugh hosts 72nd Greek Sing 6 p.m. Saturday

Youngstown State University’s sororities and fraternities will compete in the 72nd Greek Sing at 6 p.m. Saturday at Stambaugh Auditorium, 1000 Fifth Ave., Youngstown.

The annual song-and-dance event features Greek organizations competing in group performances to showcase their talents, build community and have fun. This year’s theme is “Word Play,” and each group had to pick one word that must be in the title of each song chosen for their medley.

Admission is free, and the event is open to the public.

Poet, artist give joint talk at Cortland library Saturday

Author Jeanne Bryner and artist Susan Jacobs will speak at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library Cortland Branch, 578 Lakeview Drive.

Bryner will discuss her poetry and the inspiration behind her book, “In Velvet: New and Selected Poems.”

The event also will feature Susan Jacobs, who will present the artwork featured in the book

Liberty library features program on Titanic

A program on local ties to the Titanic is scheduled at 5 p.m. Monday at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library Liberty Branch, 415 Churchill Hubbard Road.

Several Mahoning Valley natives were aboard the RMS Titanic — in both first class and third class — when it capsized in the Atlantic Ocean in 1912. The program presented by the Mahoning Valley Historical Society will explore the legacies and memories of those killed and the survivors.

Artist Chuck Olson to give artist lecture at Butler

Artist Chuck Olson will speak at 2 p.m. Sunday in Zona Auditorium at the Butler Institute of American Art, 524 Wick Ave., Youngstown.

Olson will discuss the evolving process by which he develops his imagery with reflections on influences, materials and methods in creating the paintings currently featured in the exhibition “Chuck Olson: Paintings from 2010-2024,” which is on display through May 18

TCHS offers a walking tour of Pioneer Cemetery

The Trumbull County Historical Society will have a walking tour of Pioneer Cemetery, 661 Mahoning Ave. NW, Warren, on April 19.

Located on Warren’s “Millionaire’s Row,” the oldest cemetery in the area has the remains of John Stark Edward and other pioneers of the Connecticut Western Reserve.

McGuffey society hosts Brady Lake program

Brady Lake Park will be the topic of the next William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society’s Memories of a Lifetime program.

Stephanie Virgallito of PBS Western Reserve, will talk about the park located between Ravenna and Kent that was a competitor to Youngstown’s Idora Park. It opened in 1891 and featured concerts by such artists as Guy Lombardo and Rudy Vallee.

The program starts at 10 a.m. April 19 in the meeting room at Denny’s, 4020 Belmont Ave., Liberty.

Admission is $10 for McGuffey members and $15 for non-members. Reservations are suggested and can be made by calling 330-726-8277.

Interactive murder mystery comes to Girard

Tickets are on sale now for “I Should Have Known,” an interactive murder mystery dinner theater event at 6 p.m. May 9 and 10 at Provence Mills Event Center, 1300 E. State St., Girard.

Presented by Murder Mysteerie, the production challenges the audience to solve a mystery in the penthouse of a Minnesota casino inhabited by the estranged daughter of a recently deceased wealthy landowner.

Warren library hosts Family Book Day

“Fluffy Tails & Magic Trails!” is the theme for Family Book Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 444 Mahoning Ave. NW, Warren.

The annual celebration of stories and family fun will include magic story artist Yasu Ishida at 12:30 p.m. appearances from Katerina Kittycat from “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood” at 1:30 and 2:30 p.m., a puppet show at 2 p.m. and visits with Bunnies in Baskets from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Admission is free, and all children ages 17 and younger will receive a free book to keep. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

The Jaggerz play benefit show Saturday

The Jaggerz will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday at Potter Playhouse, 100 Main Blvd., East Liverpool with proceeds benefiting East Liverpool High Schools Thespian Troupe #319 and its choir and band.

The Pittsburgh-area rock band is best known for its song “The Rapper,” which reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1970.

The current lineup includes original lead singer and bass player Jimmie Ross and keyboard player Hermie Granati, who joined shortly after “The Rapper” was released. It also will be a homecoming for Buddy Schneider, an East Liverpool native who joined the band in 2022.

Tickets are $20 and are available in advance at Chef Ray’s Restaurant or at the door on show night.

Greenville symphony concludes 96th season

The Greenville Symphony Orchestra will conclude its 96th season with a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday at Thiel College’s William A. Passavant Center, 38 Packard Ave., Greenville, Pa.

Michael Gelfand will lead the orchestra in a program that will include patriotic pieces saluting the armed forces and narrated by retired U.S. Army Sgt. First Class Mike Mason and Aaron Copeland’s “Old American Songs” with guest vocalist Max Pivik.

Tickets are on sale now for a special Opera Western Reserve dinner event on May 29 at Stambaugh Auditorium’s Christman Memorial Hall.

The evening will include a cocktail hour at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6:15 p.m. a performance of “Miss Havisham’s Wedding Night” at 7:15 p.m. by Kate Tiemens, an OWR Emerging Artist and a senior at Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory. The monodrama composed by Dominick Argento with a libretto by John Olon-Scrymgeour, is based on a character from Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations” and will be directed by Scott Skiba.

Former WFMJ-TV reporter and weekend anchor Caroline Collins will speak at Youngstown Press Club’s annual meeting and dinner at 5:30 p.m. April 21 at Stambaugh Auditorium, 1000 Fifth Ave., Youngstown.

The West Middlesex, Pa., native will speak on “Local Voices, Global Reach: The Digital Transformation of News.” Collins is an evening news anchor and content creator at KRIV-TV Fox 26 in Houston, the nation’s seventh-largest media market. She has more than two million social media followers, including a million on TikTok.

Tickets are $50 for press club members and $60 for non-members. Tickets must be purchased by April 11 and are available online at youngstownpressclub.com.

SPARK serves up ‘Fresh’ stories

“Fresh” is the theme for a SPARK Storytellers event at 7 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Playhouse, 234 E. Lincoln Way, Lisbon.

Participants worked with Kandace Cleland, executive director of Stage Left Center for the Arts, and veteran storyteller Robin Tener to craft original stories about new beginnings, bold changes and life’s unexpected twists. Featured storytellers include Gloria Matthews, Chris Lydic, Mike Moss, Ashley Arter, Aaron Hinchliff, Cleland and Tener.
