Lit Youngstown seeks writers for multiple projects
Lit Youngstown has three upcoming opportunities for area writers.
Lit Youngstown and the YWCA are holding an open call for poems inspired by artwork made by women for this year’s YWCA Women Artists Show.
Poets will receive and respond to three images to inspire one to three poems. The poems will be read by their author or a Lit Youngstown reader during the opening reception on July 24 at the YWCA, 25 W. Rayen Ave., Youngstown. The poems also will be displayed beside the corresponding artwork during the show.
Poets are not required to attend the event to participate. This is an open call for writers of all ages. The deadline to register is May 15.
Youngstown Area Community Concert Band is teaming up with Lit Youngstown in search of original poems inspired by this year’s concert theme, “Broadway Classics.” The program will feature music from Andrew Lloyd Webber and the musicals “West Side Story,” “Oklahoma!,” “Annie,” “The Lion King,” “Les Miserables,” “Jersey Boys,” “My Fair Lady” and “The Sound of Music.”
Six poems will be selected from submissions. Registered participants may submit up to two poems. Selected poems will be read, either by the poet or a Lit Youngstown reader, at the concert June 17, at Austintown Township Park. Attendance is not required for participation. Submissions will be accepted from writers of all ages through May 15.
Lit Youngstown, in celebration of its 10th anniversary, will be publishing an anthology of work by area writers. An open call for submissions of poetry and prose (fiction, nonfiction or creative nonfiction up to 4,000 words) is open to any writer who has read work at any Lit Youngstown venue or event. The deadline is June 30, with notifications being sent out by Aug. 31.
There is no fee to submit, and payment will be one print copy of the finished anthology. Previously published work will be accepted, but preference will be placed on previously unpublished, original work.
