Del pours some holiday ‘Cheers’
Kate Del serves up some traditional holiday sounds on “Cheers for Christmas.”
The seven-track, digital-only release currently available on all major streaming services is the first holiday collection from the 2011 Boardman High School graduate, whose real name is Katelyn DeLadurantey Fernandes. It’s a jazzy collection inspired by the music she grew up hearing.
“My dad is a musician,” Del said.
“He’s a drummer and a vocalist, and I grew up listening to jazz and big bands and ’70s music, and those are still just my absolute favorite genres. I grew up listening to these things, so it just felt very natural, and it’s where I feel the most at home when I’m singing.”
Del continued her musical studies at Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in music education.
Del, who also has recorded two albums of lullabies that are available for streaming, has wanted to do a Christmas record for a long time and said the timing finally was right.
The two songs she knew immediately that she wanted to include were “Sleigh Ride” and “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve.”
“‘Sleigh Ride,’ it’s just a staple for me,” Del said. “When I hear that, I just know that it’s Christmas time.
Ella Fitzgerald’s arrangements of both ‘Sleigh Ride’ and ‘What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve’ have just been favorites of mine I listen to and play along to. They’re such an inspiration for me.”
But Del also didn’t want to mimic what already had been done before.
“I think there’s a really fine line between an imitation and taking inspiration from something. I’ve been singing and performing for so many years and listening to the people, the little things and little nuances they have in their sound. I’m able to take my favorites or the things that have inspired me the most and kind of injected it into my own sound. So it pays homage to without being an imitation of, which I think is really important when you’re an independent artist.”
The other standards on the album are “Winter Wonderland,” “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas,” “My Favorite Things,” “Let It Snow” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”
“Cheers for Christmas” was recorded at a very un-Christmasy time of year (August) at Moonlight Audio in Columbus, a studio owned by a couple of Mahoning Valley natives, James Harker of Spirit of the Bear and Joe Amadio.
“If I was going to record this, that’s who I wanted to do it with, because Joey and I and James have worked together for years and years, and I knew that I could trust them with the sounds.”
A couple of Youngstown musicians — Tim Harker, saxophone, and Vinny Vivacqua, bass — also joined Del for the recording sessions along with Miles Franklin Smith, trumpet; Elaine Mylius, trombone; Paul Strawser, keyboard; and Jim Rupp, drums.
The songs were arranged by Joe Graziosi of Youngstown along with Tyler Burchfield and Chris Hansen.
Vivacqua and Andru Malachi, keyboards, will back Del when she showcases the album and other music from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday as part of the Christmas Market at the Mansion in Liberty.
“We are kind of just serving as background music for the shoppers at this event,” Del said. “It’ll be a really nice place to get our feet wet with the material and give everything a run through, talk to people, get it in front of some other ears. And the venue is incredible. We’re so excited to be a part of it.”
Album release shows also are planned at BLUJazz in Akron on Saturday, Con Alma in Pittsburgh on Dec. 14 and the Ginger Rabbit in Columbus on Dec. 21.
