Sinister Fest at Skyway; Douglas is Bluegrass HOFer

Assorted ramblings from the world of entertainment:

•   Things get sinister this weekend at Skyway Drive-In.

Dead Ink Apparel hosts its Sinister Horror Fest at the Leavittsburg theater Friday and Saturday.

Eight studio films, two indie features and 20 indie short films will be shown over the two days on the two screens.

On Friday moviegoers can choose between “Creepshow,” “House of 1000 Corpses” and “Massacre Academy” (an independent horror feature by Pittsburgh filmmaker Mark Cantu) on screen one or “Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight,” “The Lost Boys” and a short film marathon on screen two.

Saturday’s lineup features “Scream,” “Jeepers Creepers” and the independent film “Axe Giant: Wrath of Paul Bunyan” on screen one and “Little Monsters!,” “Monster House” and classic Popeye and Casper cartoons on screen two.

Special guest will be Walter Phelan, who plays Dr. Satan in “House of 1000 Corpses” and did makeup effects on “Demon Knight.” He will do a Q&A at 2:30 p.m. Saturday and will be selling autographs and photo ops, including an in-costume photo op as Dr. Satan at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Other guests include Lisa Neeld (“The Girl,” “Hellcat’s Revenge”), James L. Edwards (“Her Name Was Christa,” “The Dead Next Door”), Xander Goldman (“Massacre Academy,” “Macabre Mountain”) and the artist Versago.

There will be a vendors market, costume contest, an acoustic performance by The Undone and other activities.

Tickets each day are $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 4 to 11 with free admission from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday (movies not included). For more information, go to deadinkapparel.com/sinister-horror-fest/

•   It’s been a busy couple of weeks for Leavittsburg native Jerry Douglas.

Last Thursday, the dobro master and 16-time Grammy Award winner was inducted into the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame.

In a social media post, Douglas wrote, “This is one of those pinch me moments in life. I never thought about being in a Hall of Fame for musicians. I love playing music because it nourishes my soul. The sheer joy of making a pleasant sound with friends of like minds isn’t lost on me.”

Friend and fellow musician Sam Bush inducted Douglas, who also performed at the event.

The induction ceremony coincided with the International Bluegrass Music Awards, and the winner for album of the year was Molly Tuttle and Golden Highway’s “City of Gold,” which Douglas produced.

On Sept. 20, Douglas released his latest album “The Set,” a mix of new songs and new versions of previously recorded tracks that reflect how the songs have evolved when performed by the Jerry Douglas Band — Mike Seal, guitar; Christian Sedelmyer, fiddle; and Daniel Kimbro, bass.

It’s available to hear on all the major streaming services. I bought my signed, limited edition whiskey smoke vinyl copy on his website — jerrydouglas.com/store.

It’s a safe bet that “The Set” will make up much of the set when the Jerry Douglas Band returns to The Kent Stage on Oct. 10. Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. show are $42 and $32 and are available at kentstage.org.
