Butler displays Hahn’s photos

The work of local photographer Richard Hahn is featured in an exhibition opening Sunday at the Butler Institute of American Art.

“Facades” includes 40 black-and-white and color photographs focusing on the exterior of buildings and structures in the Mahoning Valley area. It includes historic buildings, storefronts, murals and graffiti-covered walls.

According to Hahn, “The public rarely experiences some of the more interesting perspectives.”

These include back alleyways and shots from unique angles. He described “Facades” as a photographic exploration that reaches beyond the character of a structure as established by its designer’s original intentions.

Hahn attended Ursuline High School and Youngstown State University. While pursuing his undergraduate degree, he worked with R&B bands as a trumpet player and arranger. In the early 1980s, he traveled extensively, honing his photographic skills, taking publicity shots and portraits of the bands and musicians he met.

Later, as founder of the public relations / marketing firm Keynote Media Group, photography became an essential business component. His work has been featured twice in the Butler’s Area Artists annual exhibition.

“Facades” will be open through Nov. 24 at the Butler, 524 Wick Ave., Youngstown. An opening reception runs 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday. For more information, go to butlerart.com or call 330-743-1107.

Starting at $2.99/week.
