Historical society preps for its 9th Oktoberfest

Downtown Warren’s Courthouse Square will become a German beer garden for one day next weekend with Oktoberfest on the Square.

This year’s event, which is the largest annual fundraiser for the Trumbull County Historical Society, is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Sept. 14.

“This is our ninth year, and people who have been to the event in the past will see some of our favorite staples, from the grape stomping competition to the tapping of the keg,” Reed said. “We also have some great family-friendly activities going on again this year, like pony rides and face painting.”

One of the big changes for this year is how TCHS is handling the food. In the past, they had different area businesses donate components for the German meal included in the admission price.

“This year we are outsourcing the food, so (food truck) Babcia’s Lunchbox and (downtown Warren restaurant) West and Main are collaborating to create our German-inspired menu,” Reed said.

Ice cream will be available for purchase from Cockeye Creamery. Entertainment will be provided by the Youngstown Saxon Brass Band

Organizers also have expanded the beer lineup with brews available this year from Modern Methods, Noble Creature, The 1547 Project, Birdfish and Biker Brewhouse. For the first time, the event will include a cider maker, Youngstown’s Dope Cider House and Winery.

Beer drinkers can use their drink tickets to prepare for the Stein Hoisting Competition, which debuted last year.

“It was a huge hit. We’re planning on that being another staple event,” Reed said. “We’re excited to, every year, expand the event a little bit, grow it for the community, and learn a little bit each year as we go through the process.”

Organizers hope that expanding its offering also will expand the attendance. Last year’s event drew about 400 people. This year’s goal is at least 450 people.

According to Reed, “We hope to showcase the diverse cultures in our region. Oktoberfest is meant to celebrate the German Heritage of Trumbull County while providing a fun event on Courthouse Square for all ages.”
