Double the art: 58th TAG / RAA Annual showcases regional talent
58th TAG / RAA Annual showcases regional talent
The 58th TAG / RAA Annual will span two arts organizations and two galleries.
Trumbull Art Gallery’s annual juried exhibition will feature 87 works by 68 artists.
Many of the works not selected for the annual will be displayed a couple of doors down from TAG at the Fine Arts Council of Trumbull County’s Art on Park.
While this is the 58th year for TAG Annual, it’s only the third time the gallery has partnered with the Sharon, Pa., group Random Acts of Artists for the show.
“The first time we did a juried show for them and a juried show for us,” TAG Gallery Director Wiliam Mullane said. “It just seemed so redundant. We decided to do it together and that worked well.”
The show is open to artists who live within 125 miles of the galley. Even though they reduced from three to two the number of entries an artist could submit, the gallery had more entries this year with 95 artists submitting 176 works for consideration.
“There are a lot of new faces, people I’m not familiar with, and the quality is excellent,” Mullane said. “Hanging it is like a puzzle. It’s so eclectic, so over the board, it’s a challenge making sense of it, arranging it.”
This year’s juror was West Virginia-based artist Savannah Schroll Guz, whose work was featured in TAG’s last exhibition.
“It was with genuine pleasure that I reviewed the 176 pieces submitted to this year’s Trumbull Art Gallery Annual Juried Exhibition,” Guz wrote in her juror’s statement.”Both the response to the call for work and the strength of each submission reveal a passionate and engaged creative community, which is beautiful to see. Of the 87 pieces on display, each was chosen for its visual power, both alone and in concert with the other works.”
Guz selected five artists for juror awards of equal value — Samantha Batista, Carolyn Dixon Hrusovsky, Ron Krygowski, Paul Santone Jr. and Gail Trunick. If the artist had more than one piece chosen, the award was for their body of work, not for an individual submission, Mullane said.
No two jurors would pick the exact same show, Mullane said, and he enjoys watching how different jurors approach the task.
“It’s really fun to watch,” he said. “And it’s also interesting to see some artists, across five or six years and completely different jurors, whose work is always right there, like Gail Trunick. And Ron Krygowski is getting more attention with his things over the last two years. He’s grown so much.”
The other artists featured in the TAG / RAA Annual are: Kathy Ainsley, Mary Lou Alexander, Paul Aley-Byrne, Jane Armstrong, Brenda Armstrong, Sadie Aston, Diane Beatty, Gary Blackburn, Hazel Bobosky, Robert Buganski, Mike Cantelmo, Michele Coe, Jennifer Corvino, Lisa Curry, Katerina Devadan, Lindsay Delullo, Denise DiLellio, Marie Dippolito, Karen L. In the past, artists whose work wasn’t selected for the TAG Annual had the option of displaying their creations in the Nissen Gallery at Trumbull Regional Medical Center. That option wasn’t available last year following the death of Karen Fry, who programmed the exhibitions at the hospital
David Wheeler, who programs the gallery at Art on Park, 180 N. Park Ave., offered to host the Salon des Refuses exhibition there this year.
In her juror’s statement, Guz wrote, “If your work was not selected to appear in this year’s TAG show, please do not be dissuaded from creating or submitting next year. Instead, let your creative resolve be galvanized. After all, James McNeill Whistler, Gustave Courbet and Edouard Manet were just three of the now-iconic painters rejected from the 1863 Paris Salon. Their work appeared in the inaugural Salon des Refusés, an exhibition that ultimately gave birth to the Impressionist movement. So please keep creating and submitting. You have a unique voice to share.”
Artists whose work will be shown at Art on Park are: Brenda Armstrong, Sadie Aston, Diane Beatty, Richardo Bisson, Scott Chopko.
