Packard band starts its outdoor season

The music of “Star Wars” and Broadway will be a part of the W.D. Packard Concert Band’s first outdoor performance of 2023.

Guest conductor for the concert will be Christopher M. Cicconi, director of bands and orchestras and an associate professor of music education at Towson University in Maryland. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Youngstown State University, his master’s from Arizona State University and a doctorate in instrumental conducting from the University of Miami, where he was awarded a Henry Mancini Fellowship.

As a strong advocate for music education and community outreach, Cicconi is in demand throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and is a sought-after guest conductor, clinician and guest speaker. His most recent publication, “The Band Music Handbook, A Catalog of Emerging Band Repertoire,” is a valuable resource and essential tool for wind band directors worldwide.

Trombone soloist on “Slidin’ Down the Mississippi” will be Bob Matchett, a music educator and former director of bands at Seneca Valley Senior High School in Harmony, Pa. As a freelance trombonist, Matchett has performed and toured with such acts as the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, Rosemary Clooney, Toshiko Akiyoshi, The Temptations, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Kristin Chenoweth, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Youngstown Symphony Orchestra, Warren Chamber Orchestra and Cleveland Jazz Orchestra

Matchett can be heard on Nancy Wilson’s Grammy-winning album “Turned to Blue,” and he’s also recorded with New York Voices, Three Rivers Jazz Orchestra, Billy Price Band, Cleveland Jazz Orchestra and The Vindys.

The concert starts at 7 p.m. Sunday at the south lawn bandshell at Packard Music Hall 1703 Mahoning Ave. NW, Warren. Admission is free, and funding is provided by the W.D. Packard trust.
