Fest finds Frenzy on East Side

Mick Jenkins is the headliner for this year’s Federal Frenzy, which moves to East Federal Street this year.

Federal Frenzy moves to the other side of Central Square for 2023, but the concept remains the same.

Construction in downtown Youngstown forced the music and arts festival presented by Youngstown State University’s Penguin Productions to move to East Federal Street between Penguin City Brewing and Youngstown Flea, but the event still will feature more than 20 acts on four stages from 2 to 11 p.m. Saturday.

Event lead Mia Albaugh said it became evident last spring after meeting with city officials that West Federal Street probably wouldn’t be available.

“Our backup plan became our main plan and we decided to switch gears and partner with Penguin City and Youngstown Flea,” Albaugh said.

Penguin City is big enough to host two indoor stages and outdoor stages will be set up on East Federal and at Youngstown Flea.

While most of the lineup follows the festival tradition with a mix of local and regional acts with an emphasis on indie / alternative rock, this year’s headliner is Chicago hip hop artist Mick Jenkins.

Jenkins has drawn comparisons to artists like Gil Scott Heron for his poetic and political lyrics and has appeared at major music festivals like Pitchfork. He is known for such songs as “Jazz,” “Vibe,” “Angles,” “Understood,” “Carefree” and “Truffles.”

Albaugh said he was selected after multiple listening parties by Penguin Productions’ members.

“We thought his style of music would represent what students would like to see,” she said.

Music is only one component of the event.

Youngstown Fleas will host a vendor market from 2 to 8 p.m. with Sweet Memories Vintage Tees, 1054 Designs, Go Retro, Little Paws Apparel, La Petite Crocheterie, Glorious Soaps & More, Second Chance Silvers, Kenzie Kay Designs, Ethereal Creations, Sara Krisher Studio, Corinne Katlyn Designs, Bake Me Treats, Chocolate Outlaw, Linda’s Bee Farm and Forestview Farmhouse.

Live art performances are planned by Alex Jesko, Kayla Hay and Rachel Hirtz, and interactive activities will include basketball hoops, tarot card readings, henna tattoos, games and famous characters from Castle on a Cloud Entertainment.

Since the festival is located farther from downtown restaurants, Albaugh said they are bringing in additional food trucks for this years event. Food vendors include Sweet Sips, One Hot Cookie, OH Donut Co., Wok on the Wild Side, Sauceeino, Big Green Thing and Magic Tree. An outdoor beer garden will be located between Penguin City and the main stage.

Penguin Productions also will offer shuttle service for YSU students and attendees. Festival-goers can part at YSU’s Wick Avenue parking deck for $5, and shuttles will run between the deck and the festival until midnight.

Volunteers are needed to work for the event. All volunteers will receive a Federal Frenzy T-shirt. Those interested in volunteering can contact Liliana Marinkovich at lrmarinkovich@student.ysu.edu.
