New Music Guild winter concert premieres Sunday

Sean Baran and Silvia Games DuBos will be the guest artists for the New Music Guild’s winter concert on Sunday.

Baran is organist at Boardman United Methodist Church and a pianist. A summa cum laude graduate of the Dana School of Music, he is resident artist at the Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center in Midland, Pa. He is an officer for a number of music educational organizations and has served on the executive committee of the American Guild of Organists and as the Youngstown Symphony ensemble keyboardist.

DuBos is principal cellist of the Washington, Pa., and Greenville symphonies and was principal cellist of the symphonies of Ohio University, Duquesne University and the Symphony Orchestra of Lanus National University in Argentina.

She also is artistic director of the ArsDocta International Music Festival. A committed educator, she has taught cello in Argentina, France, Brazil, Ecuador and the United States. She runs a large private studio in Pittsburgh and holds a master’s degree in performance from Duquesne.

The concert will open with performances by New Music Guild coordinators Gwyneth Rollin, violin, and Robert Rollin, piano. They will play Robert Rollin’s “The Holidays,” a reminiscence of the joys of sharing celebratory family meals, and his “Passover Songs,” a setting of two folk melodies sung at the Seder. Rollin will perform his “Seven Sound-Images on Seven Stanza By a Child,” a setting of a poem by a young inmate of the Terezin Concentration Camp.”

DuBos and Baran will perform Dmitri Shostakovich’s, Cello Sonata in D Minor. Op. 40 and the world premiere of Robert Rollin’s “Spiritual Images.” Baran also will play Chopin’s Fantasie-Impromptu. Op. 66, George Crumb’s “Dream-Images from Makrokosmos Volume 1,” and Vincent Persichetti’s Piano Sonata No. 3, Op. 22.

The concert starts at 3 p.m. Sunday at SS. Peter and Paul Church, Holy Apostles Parish, 421 Covington St., Youngstown. Admission is free. An after party will take place in the church basement immediately following the concert.
