Injury doesn’t stop the Machine from raging

CLEVELAND — After a two-year delay caused by COVID-19, Rage Against the Machine wasn’t going to be suppressed by a leg injury.

The band’s tour with Run the Jewels came to Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse on Wednesday and plays Pittsburgh’s PPG Paints Arena tonight. Few in the near-capacity crowd used their seats, but Zack de la Rocha needed one. The lead singer apparently injured his leg earlier this month in Chicago during the second show on the tour, and he performed the entire 18-song set Wednesday while sitting on a monitor at the front of the stage (no ornate throne for him like one Dave Grohl used to tour with a broken leg in 2015).

The mobility issues didn’t hurt the energy level of the 95-minute performance — de la Rocha mustered plenty of fury while seated. The only effect it might have had is there was no “fake” encore, that moment where the band pretends the show is over, leaves the stage and “only” returns because of the massive ovation from the crowd.

Rage started with “Bombtrack” and ended with “Killing in the Name” without pause before his bandmates — Tom Morello, guitar; Tim Commerford, bass; and Brad Wilk, drums — gathered around de la Rocha for bows. Two roadies then carried him off the stage.

De la Rocha had plenty to say about a host of topics. The setlist was made up of songs written more than 20 years ago, but raging about immigration, human rights, personal freedom and police brutality is, if anything, even more timely today.

There was little between-song banter with the band letting the lyrics do the talking. Occasionally, those lyrics were supplemented by graphics projected on the massive screen that served as a backdrop for the stage. And the lighting design, dominated by dark reds and bright whites, was dazzling and sometimes blinding, like the strobing effect on “Down Rodeo.”

Run the Jewels joined Rage on stage for a combined version of the Jewels’ “Close Your Eyes.” De la Rocha introduced Killer Mike and El-P, saying there’s been no group like them in the last 40 years that can “get your head right” with a couple of beats and “straight-up reality rhymes.”

It’s hard to imagine a more sympatico touring partner. Both acts used words like blunt instruments to get their message across. In their own 45-minute set, Killer Mike and El-P rapped “Ooh La La,” “Walking in the Snow,” “Stay Gold” and other favorites and even improvised a short song while El-P tied his shoe.
