Fins preps for ‘Last Swim’

It’s the “Last Waltz” for Fins to the Left, although in this case, “Last Swim” may be more appropriate.

The Jimmy Buffett tribute act led by Shawn Lawless will play its final gig Friday at the Warren Community Amphitheatre as part of the River Rock at the Amp concert series.

It’s not like the members of Fins were road warriors. Many years, the only gig the band would play would be its River Rock appearance, but Lawless said the time was right to stop.

“We had such a good run,” he said. “It was great to play for Kenny (Haidaris, River Rock promoter), but it’s time to call it a day … Life changes, everybody is going in different directions. It seemed like the right time. The guys in the band agreed with me. Let’s do one big hurrah and go down the road.”

Haidaris said Fins always was a popular River Rock attraction.

“Everybody loves Buffett, that’s half the battle,” Haidaris said. “And Shawn does a great job with the music, and he’s friends with the Coral Reefers. Everyone has fun all night, and with everything going on in the world, it’s great to have a fun night out.”

The Coral Reefers are Buffett’s backing band, and it should be no surprise that, for Fins’ final concert, the band is bringing in several of the performers who regularly share the stage with Buffett.

Returning on Friday will be Robert Greenidge, steel drums; Eric Darken, percussion; and Nadirah Shakoor and Tina Gullickson, backing vocals.

Greenidge has been with Buffett’s band since the “One Particular Harbor” album in 1983. He’s also played with John Lennon, Harry Nilsson, Brian Wilson, Ringo Starr and Taj Mahal.

Darken has recorded with many of the biggest names in rock, country and pop, including Taylor Swift, Bon Jovi, Sheryl Crow, Bob Seger, Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, Jewel, Vince Gill, Amy Grant, Art Garfunkel, Brad Paisley, Keith Urban and Willie Nelson.

Shakoor was a member of the band Arrested Development and has toured with Janet Jackson, Al Jarreau, Paul Abdul and Howard Hewett as a backing vocalist. Gullickson, who has sung with Buffett since 1997, also has recorded with Tori Amos, Bill Medley and Martika.

Joining them Friday will be Mick Utley, son of Buffett’s longtime keyboard player Michael Utley, who also has performed with Fins.

Sharing the stage with the Coral Reefers over the years and becoming friends with the musicians has been one of the highlights of his Fins’ experience, Lawless said. One of his favorite memories involves the song “He Went to Paris,” which was Lawless’ father’s favorite Buffett song, mainly because Waylon Jennings covered it.

“I was lucky enough to get to go to Paris and hang out with the band at the cafe next to the palace they played at,” Lawless said. “Being in Paris and hearing that song, that’s the most special to me.”

But those special guests aren’t the most important part of Friday’s show.

“My very favorite thing of the whole deal is the people in the crowd,” Lawless said. “All of the amazing people we’ve met over the years and having the kids on stage, that’s really the best thing. You can tell the sheer joy when they’re up there and among thousands of people and seeing all the people watching them and cheering for them. When they’re up there singing, playing the maracas or dancing, it’s a great feeling.”

Original bass player Giulio Savioli died in 2021 and longtime piano and acoustic guitar player Doug Smith had a prior commitment and won’t be able to be there, but Lawless said he and the band — Chris Rossvanes, drums; Craig Peppy, drums and percussion; Chuck Hall, lead guitar; Bill Ebie, 12-string guitar; Jeff Spencer, harmonica; and Robert Calhoun, bass — are looking forward to playing together one last time.

“Because we only have one show a year, the past few have been very similar,” Lawless said. “But we’ve spun things around a little bit and added a couple new things. It will be fun.”
