Playhouse announces classes for all ages

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown Playhouse will offer six week-long classes for children and two master classes for adults as part of its summer educational schedule.

Three classes will run from June 13 to 17. In “Reader’ Theatre,” for children ages 5 to 8, kids will perform by reading scripts created from grade-level books and stories and then act them out with costumes.

“Stage Performance Act I” (ages 9 to 12) will have students rehearse and perform scenes from such plays as “The 39 Steps” and “Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

For “Stage Performance Act II” (ages 13 to 17), participants will rehearse and perform scenes and monologues from such plays as “The Play That Goes Wrong” and “Macbeth.”

Two different sessions of “Please Clap: Kids Comedy Club,” one for children ages 9 to 12 and another for those ages 13 to 17, will run June 20 to 24. Students will get to create sketches and learn how to write their own jokes.

“Broadway Bootcamp,” from June to July 1, will train students ages 9 to 12 to become triple-threat performers in singing, dancing and acting with songs from the musical “All Shook Up.”

A masterclass on “Music Theory: How to Read Music” on June 12 is open to those 18 and older who want to strengthen their singing skills by understanding music theory, learning how to read rhythm and feeling more confident sight reading music.

“Stand Up Comedy: Write Your Own Jokes” on Aug. 7 is open to those 21 and older who want to learn the science of stand-up and how to write a punchline.

Class size is limited and enrollment opens 10 a.m. May 20. Class times and costs can be found at youngstownplayhouse.org/classes-workshops and by calling 330-788-8739.
