OMEA, YSU jazz ensembles perform Saturday

The Ohio Music Educators Association District 5 Honors Jazz Ensembles will perform Saturday at DeYor Performing Arts Center’s Ford Family Recital Hall.

Also playing will be the Youngstown State University Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Kent Engelhardt.

OMEA District 5 encompasses Ashtabula, Trumbull and Mahoning counties. An Honors Jazz Ensemble from each county will perform at the concert.

Students from District 5 submitted auditions for membership in the groups, and several YSU faculty were part of the audition process. The guest director for the Honors Jazz Ensembles is YSU alumnus Mike Kamuf.

The YSU Jazz Ensemble will be performing music arranged by Kamuf and will also feature him on trumpet with the group.

A native of Cleveland, Kamuf received bachelor’s degrees in both jazz performance and music education from the Dana School of Music and a master’s degree in instrumental conducting from George Mason University. His compositions and arrangements have been performed by notable jazz artists and ensembles.

Kamuf has performed with the Woody Herman and Tommy Dorsey Orchestras and has recorded as a member of the Alan Baylock Jazz Orchestra. He currently leads his own jazz octet, the Mike Kamuf Little Big Band, comprised of outstanding musicians from the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., areas.

The concert starts at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ford Family Recital Hall, 260 W. Federal St., Youngstown. Tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for students and are available online at deyor
