ormac McCarthy’s “The Sunset Limited” opens Friday for a two-weekend run in the Youngstown Playhouse’s Moyer Room as part of the Griffith-Adler Series.

It will be the first on-site production at the Playhouse since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The opening production of “The Color Purple” was staged at Powers Auditorium.

On a subway platform in New York City, an ex-con from the South (played by DC Colvin) saves the life of an intellectual atheist (Terry Shears) who wasn’t looking for salvation. The reformed man offers salvation of another kind when he brings the failed suicide victim back to his Harlem apartment.

In this two-man play, Shears and Colvin engage in a gripping life-and-death debate as they forcefully explore opposing views of life, faith and human nature.

The production is directed by Charles Simon with Denise Sculli as stage manager, Johnny Pecano as technical director and Leslie Brown as lighting and scenic designer.

According to Simon, “‘The Sunset Limited’ kicks off The Moyer Room series with powerful subject matter and powerful performances. I am excited, delighted and over the moon to welcome audiences again. We’ve gone through so much for so long and remained steadfast, knowing that art matters.”

It will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday through Oct. 24 at the Youngstown Playhouse, 600 Playhouse Lane. Tickets are $18 for adults and $15 for senior citizens, students and military and are available online at youngstownplayhouse.org and by calling the box office at 330-788-8739 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays. Seating is general admission.

The Youngstown Playhouse requires audience members to be masked and eligible company members to be vaccinated.
