‘Lion King’ musical returns to Cleveland

Tour includes 16 shows in Cleveland beginning Oct. 1; tickets go on sale June 21

Touring musicals will return to Cleveland’s Playhouse Square with Disney’s “The Lion King” — one of the biggest shows of the last 25 years.

The national tour will relaunch with a 16-performance run Oct. 1 to 15 at the KeyBank State Theatre.

According to Playhouse Square President and CEO Gina Vernaci, “‘The Lion King’ will make its triumphant return to Cleveland at a time when families will be seeking ways to reconnect and create new memories, and what better way to do that than by experiencing this stunning and joyful show together. We are preparing all of Playhouse Square for the safe and healthy return of audiences and performers this fall.”

Winner of six Tony and eight Drama Desk awards, the stage production based on the Oscar-winning Disney animated feature had more than 9,300 performances on Broadway before its run was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The October dates will be the fifth time the tour has played Cleveland, making it the first North American city to host the production five separate times.

Playhouse Square and “The Lion King” will be in compliance with local, county, state and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines in place at the time of the performance. They are therefore subject to change, and predicated on full capacity. Should capacity guidelines not change by the time of the performance, flexible options will be available to ticket holders. Ticket holders who do not comply with venue policies will not be admitted.

Show times will be 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 1 and 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets range from $29 to $175 and will go on sale at 10 a.m. June 21 at playhousesquare.org. Tickets also can be ordered by phone at 216-241-6000 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays beginning June 21.
