Grammy winner will present guitar master class Friday for YSU

Grammy-winning guitarist and composer Bill Frisell will conduct a free master class on Friday.

The event is underwritten by the Michael Family Trust “Robert W. Michael” Guitar Endowment and The Student Government Association of Youngstown State University.

During a career that spans more than 50 years, Frisell has worked with a wide range of artists and ensembles spanning multiple genres — Paul Motian, Elvis Costello, Ginger Baker, The Los Angeles Philharmonic, Van Dyke Parks, Rickie Lee Jones, Marianne Faithful, John Scofield, Lyle Mays, Vernon Reid, Paul Bley, Wayne Horvitz, Hal Willner, David Sanborn, Allen Toussaint, Lucinda Williams, Bono, Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois.

He won the 2005 Grammy Award for best contemporary jazz album for “Unspeakable” and he’s been nominated four other times. Throughout his career, Frisell has recorded for ECM, Rykodisc, Nonesuch, Gramavision, Decca, Songlines, Savoy, Tzadik, Sony / Okeh and Blue Note.

He was named guitarist of the year by DownBeat magazine for 10 consecutive years, and is is the subject of the documentary “Bill Frisell: A Portrait.”
