Dana School of Music will host a Fiddle Day on April 10 online.

The event was created by Dana violin lecturer Wendy Case and the Youngstown State University Strings Guild to showcase the various forms of music created by the fiddle.

Celtic, klezmer and chop techniques will be explored. Participants will have the opportunity to choose one or more classes taught by the guest artists Caitlin Hedge, Tracy Silverman and Steven Greenman.

According to Dana Director Randall Goldberg, “All three clinicians are master performers and excellent teachers, and I am delighted to see how Dr. Case has organized such an excellent workshop for our students and the public. She is making great strides to enhance YSU’s reputation as a center for string pedagogy in the region.”

Hedge, who performs with Opera Western Reserve and the Warren Philharmonic Orchestra, will lead a course in learning to play the Celtic fiddle that addresses the differences in style between classical and Celtic and the challenges when transferring between styles.

Greenman, an internationally renowned klezmer violinist and clinician, will lead a klezmer music master class, teaching music from both the artistic and dance klezmer repertoires with a focus on the stylistic phrasing, style and ornamentation.

Silverman, an electric violinist, will teach a course on contemporary fiddle technique, including the “chop.”

His book “The Strum Bowing Method” presents a clear and comprehensive approach for string players to easily learn how to play and teach the grooves in contemporary popular music.
