Salem announces carriage house tours

Tickets are on sale now for a walking tour of the carriage houses along Salem’s South Lincoln Avenue on Oct. 10.

The carriage houses are open to the public only once every 10 years. There are more than 70 single-family homes and with little or no commercial intrusions, and all of South Lincoln Avenue is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The carriage houses date back to the mid-1800s and reflect a variety of styles, including Queen Anne, frame, brick, single story and two story. There are single carriage, two carriage and even carriage houses with living quarters for the household staff and stables for the horses are included.

The oldest surviving carriage house on the avenue was owned by Louis H. Brush, a friend and confidant of President Warren G. Harding and publisher of several newspapers, including the Warren Tribune, New Castle News, Salem News and East Liverpool Review.

The first tour starts at 9 a.m. from 725 S. Lincoln Ave. with the last tour at 3 p.m. The docent-escorted tour will last about 90 minutes, and tour groups will be kept to 10 people or fewer. Social distancing will be observed and face coverings are mandatory.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance online at www.salempreservationsociety.org or at the customer service desk of the Salem Giant Eagle. Tickets also will be available Oct. 10 at 725 S. Lincoln.
