Robins Theatre returns with classic movies

WARREN — With the concert industry still shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Robins Theatre will reopen as a movie theater, starting with a couple of classics that may have played there in its heyday.

The 1942 film “Casablanca,” winner of three Academy Awards including best picture, will be shown at 7 p.m. June 19. The 1939 musical “The Wizard of Oz,” a family favorite featuring the song “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” is scheduled for two shows at 2 and 7 p.m. June 20.

“We wanted to do some classics, ones that people are familiar with,” Ken Haidaris, president of Sunrise Entertainment, said. “It will be a good test of how comfortable people are being in a theater.”

Admission will be $5 at the door, and capacity will be capped at 25 percent, about 350 people, for each screening. Those that come together can sit together, but moviegoers will be encouraged to practice social distancing.

The theater has been cleaned extensively and hand sanitizer will be available at various locations. When the theater, which first opened in 1923, was renovated after being closed for more than 40 years, touchless toilets, sinks and towel dispensers were installed in all of the bathrooms.

The movies will be the first events at the theater since March 8, when Blue Oyster Cult performed there less than a week before directives from Gov. Mike DeWine shut down evertything except for essential businesses.

While those restrictions have been lifted on most businesses, including movie theaters, they remain in place for venues like the Robins that feature concerts and live theater.

Movies always were planned to be a part of the programming at the venue, Haidaris said, and a digital projection system was installed as part of the renovation. The theater will use next weekend’s movies to “test the waters” and gauge audience response before announcing any additional movies.
