High school musicians join YSU ensemble

Area high school students will perform Monday with the Youngstown State University Wind Ensemble.

The 2019 YSU High School Side-By-Side Honors Wind Ensemble is made up of 54 students representing 22 northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania high schools: Ashtabula Edgewood, Austintown Fitch, Blackhawk, Boardman, Canfield, Canon McMillan, Crestview, East Liverpool, Grove City, Howland, Hubbard, Lakeview, Laurel, Lincoln Performing Arts, Mineral Ridge, Mohawk, North Hills, Shaler Area, South Range, Trinity, United Local and Wilmington Area.

According to YSU Wind Ensemble Conductor Stephen L. Gage, “This is a fabulous way for high school students to experience all that goes into a college performance. They will sit right beside our Dana School of Music students on the Stambaugh stage during a rehearsal and performance … Our students and faculty will work with them throughout this process to showcase the level of musicianship necessary for one of our performances.”

The concert will begin with the wind ensemble performing Saint-Saens’ “Marche Militaire Francaise,” Claudie Smith’s “Festival Variations” and a medley from Michael Kaman’s soundtrack for the 1991 film “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.” John Mackey’s “Asphalt Cocktail,” conducted by graduate conducting student Ryan Dutton, will close the first half of the program.

The high school ensemble will perform with the wind ensemble for the second half, which will include “Variations on a Korean Folk Song,” featuring soprano soloist Misook Yun singing the “Arirang” lullaby, Julie Giroux’s “One Life Beautiful” and John Philip Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever” march.

The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. at Stambaugh Auditorium, 1000 Fifth Ave., Youngstown. Tickets are $7 for adults, $6 for senior citizens and non-YSU students and free for YSU students with a valid ID and are available at the Stambaugh box office, online at stambaughauditorium.com and by calling 330-259-0555.

Starting at $3.23/week.
