Butler trustees select Bitonte as board leader

YOUNGSTOWN — Dr. Gary Bitonte is the new president of the board of trustees for the Butler Institute of American Art.

Bitonte was elected to the two-year term at the board’s meeting in September and succeeds Thomas J. Cavalier. Bitonte joined the board in 2014 and previously served as vice president.

He practiced urologic surgery for more than 20 years and is a clinical associate professor of anatomy at Northeast Ohio Medical University. He is former chairman of the board of the Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley and currently serves as a trustee of the Youngstown State University Foundation.

Other newly elected officers to the Butler board are Michael Shultz as vice president and Franklin S. Bennett Jr. as treasurer. Vincent Bacon was elected to another term as board secretary.

New additions to the board, which has 39 members, are Judge Benita Y. Pearson, Carl James and Chris Muransky.
