Trumbull Art Gallery will celebrate its 55th TAG Annual and its first accessible lift with an open house on Saturday.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the lift, which will make the downstairs classrooms and the gallery space fully accessible, was added to the traditional festivities for TAG’s juried exhibition open to artists who live within 100 miles of Trumbull County.

Director Pat Galgozy said, “(The lift) definitely expands the things we can do at TAG and gives us access that we wouldn’t have otherwise.”

The lift, which cost more than $35,000, was paid for with a combination of grants and private donations, and has been in use for about two months.

This year’s TAG Annual will feature 90 works in all media selected from 237 submissions by 103 artists. Another 77 works not selected for the TAG Annual will shown in the Nissen Gallery at Trumbull Regional Medical Center in Warren.

“There was a lot of really nice work, some really nice paintings, really nice photography,” said juror Gary Taneri, a painter who grew up in Warren and now lives in Youngstown. “I went through and picked out the ones I wanted first, the one that caught my eye. We cleared a wall and put those there. Then I went through 10, 15 times picking the rest. I was looking for well-conceived and well-executed pieces.”

Taneri also selected seven works for juror awards, which will be announced at 7 p.m. Saturday during the reception. He said those selections were easier than deciding which work to accept overall.

“That was mostly a personal decision, based on the ones I liked, the things that I would hang in my house,” Taneri said.

Also opening Saturday will be an exhibition by ceramics artist Shannon Marie Black in the TAG Underground Gallery. Black, a graduate of Lakeview High School and Youngstown State University, also earned her master’s degree in ceramics from Kent State University earlier this year.

She now lives and works in Tuscon, Ariz.
