Have you ever sat in the in-between?

Have you ever sat in the in-between?

You know the moments I’m talking about. The space after not knowing and before really knowing. The awkward, heavy, quiet space between Point A and Point B. That place where everything feels suspended and nothing has settled yet.

It might be one of the hardest places to live.

And somehow…we are almost always there.

The in-between looks like waiting to hear if you got the job. Or if the client said yes. Or if the numbers finally reflect the work you’ve been pouring your energy into.

Sometimes it looks like waiting on test results, staring at your phone like it might magically ring. Sometimes it’s something as small — but as frustrating — as waiting for IT to fix a problem that is standing between you and your next level.

Other times, the in-between looks like standing at the edge of something new.

You’ve leapt, but you haven’t landed yet. You started the thing, launched the idea, said yes to the opportunity, and now you wait to see if the ground under you is sturdy or if you’re still floating.

The hardest part?

You can’t plan too much.

You want to prepare. You want to feel in control. You want to map it all out. But you also know the results aren’t actually in your hands. You’re stuck in this strange balancing act — trying to be proactive without gripping too tightly.

It’s exhausting.

And right now, I feel it most in the space between Christmas and New Year’s.

That quiet, heavy, confusing week.

The decorations are still up. The cookies are still on the counter. The last of the gatherings still need to happen. And there’s this low-level tiredness that has been building since November.

There’s a kind of dread that creeps in… because you’re supposed to keep going. Keep celebrating. Keep showing up. Keep smiling. Keep wrapping the season up neatly with a bow.

But underneath that… there’s anticipation.

January sits there like a fresh, untouched notebook. New plans. New energy. New goals.

A new version of you that you’re not fully sure how to step into yet. It’s exciting. But it’s also intimidating.

And that’s exactly where the in-between lives.

Not fully in the holiday anymore, but not fully into the new year yet. Not resting, but not sprinting. Not finished, but not fully started.

Sometimes I think we spend more of our lives here than anywhere else.

But here’s what I want to leave you with — from me to you:

If you find yourself in the in-between, take it as a sign to soak in the good around you.

The warm cookie on the counter. The call from a high school friend who popped back into town. The silent cup of coffee before the house wakes up. The roar of new toys being tested and loved for the very first time.

Because as hard as the in-between is, this is our opportunity. An opportunity to not let the thoughts consume us. An opportunity to not live in the “what ifs.”

An opportunity to not rush ahead or fall behind.

But to be right where we are. To feel it. To breathe it in. To honor the pause.

So as this year begins to close and a new one quietly waits its turn, my wish for you is this: May your new year be soft and strong.

May it bring you clarity without pressure. Joy without performance. Growth without burnout. And moments of stillness that remind you that you are exactly where you are meant to be.

Happy New Year.
