Hiints from Heloise: Get good portion control with a tin

Dear Heloise: Portion sizes used to get out of hand in my kitchen until I put a muffin tin to use in a new way. Instead of guessing or overfilling bowls, I now divide snacks into each cup, which creates instant portion control without any measuring tools. Nuts, cut fruit, crackers and vegetables stay neatly separated, making it much easier to stay mindful of how much you eat.

This method has also been especially helpful for children since portions are clearly visible and snack time feels more engaging. During meal prep, ingredients stay organized and ready to grab, which saves time when cooking begins. Even when entertaining guests, small bites are served neatly, and nothing rolls together. Cleanup is quick, and everything stays tidy.

Dear Heloise: The space under my sink used to feel like a cluttered mess until I added a simple tension rod. I placed a spring-loaded rod across the cabinet and hung spray bottles by their triggers, lifting them off the base and instantly creating more usable space. Now I can see everything at a glance and no longer need to dig around for supplies.

Keeping bottles upright also helps prevent leaks and spills that used to happen far too often. After one too many spills, we clearly needed a better system. The open space underneath now holds small bins for sponges, brushes and extra cleaning items.

Since the rod adjusts easily, it fits most cabinets without tools or a permanent installation. This quick fix has turned a cramped area into an organized, easy-to-maintain space that works every day.

Dear Heloise: Too much clutter used to build up in my home until I put a seasonal rotation system into place. I store items that I don’t currently need in labeled bins, while I keep only in-season clothing, decorations and gear within easy reach. This approach keeps closets from becoming overcrowded and makes it much easier to find what I need.

When switching out items, I also take the time to sort through everything and set aside anything that is no longer in use for donations. I learned this the hard way after holding on to things for far too long! This habit prevents clutter from piling up again over time. The result is a lighter, more-manageable home, and daily routines feel smoother.
