Struthers church to mark 100 years

STRUTHERS — Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, 67 McClure St., will celebrate its 100th anniversary milestone with several upcoming events.

On Oct. 25, to commemorate 100 years of faith, family, service and community involvement, and to recognize God for his faithfulness, the members of the church are preparing to celebrate the momentous occasion with a “Black and Gold Celebratory Banquet” held at Archangel Michael Hall, 401 12th St. in Campbell. Entertainment will be provided by a former member of Pilgrim, jazz musician Richard D. Johnson, who was invited to become a member of the Wynton Marsalis Septet and has performed with Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder.

To verify ticket availability ($50 per person), email pilgrim.baptist@sbcglobal.net or call 330-755-6756.

On Oct. 26 at 10:30 a.m., the celebration continues, as the dedication of Pilgrim’s newly renovated sanctuary will be held.

The morning message will be delivered by former local Minister James H. Crawley Jr. of Hopewell Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida, where Gary L. Williams is pastor.

Crawley is the primary speaker at 10 facilities of incarceration serving youth, as well as adults, where he and his team visit each facility monthly, providing spiritual guidance and mentorship.

During worship, the anniversary praise team will provide musical selections conducted by Leslie Frost-Kitchen and accompanied by former Minister of Music, Richard Johnson.

The church began in a garage at 131 Narcissa as a neighborhood Missionary Circle, on Nov. 10, 1925, at the home of Pearl Penson. Other notables who gathered for the occasion were Rebecca Nicolas, Georgia Watkins, Dora Sheppard, Annie Tate, Lizzie People, Rosa Davis and Annie Mays.

The Struthers community and surrounding area is invited to participate in the “once in a lifetime” celebration, as the church congregation reflects on 100 years of spiritual growth and service.

Starting at $3.23/week.
