Master Gardeners at the Canfield Fair

When: Wednesday to Sept. 6

What: Visit the Master Gardeners display during the Canfield Fair and learn more about The Ohio State University Extension programs, events and volunteer trainings. Check out plant displays and information about an array of gardening and nature topics. Sit for a while to rest during the fair while engaging with volunteers. Bring the little ones for fun activities to learn about STEM and 4-H programs in the county.

Ponds and Aquatic Life in Winter

When: 6:30 p.m. Sept. 16

What: Ponds in our region are remarkably dynamic habitats that change naturally–but dramatically–with the season. The session will cover how the pond environment changes over the course of a year and how life persists under ice. The speaker is Eugene Braig IV, The Ohio State University Extension, program director, aquatic ecosystems.

Dining With Diabetes

56th annual Horticultural Show

When: Saturday and Sunday

What: Sponsored by The Gardeners of Greater Youngstown (formerly The Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown), this is the largest horticultural show in the Mahoning Valley. Bring flowers and vegetables to learn more about gardening and see the entries.

Where: Fellows Riverside Gardens, Mill Creek MetroParks, Youngstown.

Cost: Free, open to all exhibitors. Ribbons and cash prizes.

Naturalist Series: Ohio’s Comeback Critter: The Bobcat

What: When Ohio became a state, numerous native wildlife species already had vanished. Many species since have recovered or currently are rebounding. Jamey Emmert with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife will discuss the resurgence of the bobcat, identification tips, population distribution and trends, life history and ecology, and how to contribute important data.
