Putting the cart before the horse

DEAR EDITOR: Upon waking April 9, goods coming from China are now double (and then some) in cost due to Trump’s tariffs / trade war. Anyone who thinks differently needs to go back to Economics 101. These tariffs are nothing more than an exercise in putting the cart before the horse. While I can agree we need to kick our dependence (addiction?) to imported goods coming from less-than-friendly nations and need to bring manufacturing back stateside, Mr. Trump is approaching this the wrong way. Mr. Trump needed to push Congress to make us more appealing to manufacturers looking to ...

Consider a good alternative to DOGE

DEAR EDITOR: Let’s examine how President Trump’s DOGE initiative negatively affects the average citizen. We’ve become dependent on the federal government to address situations the private sector either ignores or causes. It also funds research benefiting a broad sector of the populace and many industries. Elon Musk and many other billionaires built their fortunes on government grants, contracts and research. They now want more favorable regulations and less oversight that will enable obscene profits and tax breaks at the expense of the average citizen’s health, education, ...

Protesters, politicians have it wrong

DEAR EDITOR: “Protesters” who get paid to pretend to be freedom fighters are very un-American. “Politicians” who get paid to pass laws (and weaken the youth of America) all the while pushing “China’s agenda” are very un-American. If China were to disconnect Americans from “their” technology, could the youth of America survive? How long can they go without their phones (rushing out to buy new ones)? China needs America so much that their plan to conquer America by 2030 has been moved up to 2027. If Trump’s tariffs against China scare Americans, it means ...

Disrespect comes with consequences

DEAR EDITOR: I attended the April 7 town hall that Michael Rulli deemed a “pathetic spectacle.” The standing-room-only event was evidence of this congressional district’s desire to be heard and acknowledged by its government officials. It is alarming that my representative has been unwilling to host a public forum to listen to the concerns of his constituents. What is unforgivable is the sarcastic and dismissive tone in which Mr. Rulli declined the invitation to attend Monday’s town hall. As a registered Democrat, I conduct due diligence on candidates and issues, and ...

Ballot access earned; can’t be bungled

DEAR EDITOR: Only 11% of eligible voters showed up for Trumbull County’s most recent primary election — a figure that should deeply alarm anyone who believes in democracy. But low turnout isn’t just about apathy — it’s also about access, trust and training. On Tuesday, poorly trained poll workers handed voters an “issues-only” ballot, stripping them of the right to vote in partisan races. That’s not a minor mistake. That’s disenfranchisement. In historically marginalized communities, where civic engagement is already undermined by decades of neglect and ...

Ohio’s energy impact: at core of daily life

DEAR EDITOR: Ohio’s energy industry is the backbone of modern life — powering our homes, fueling our vehicles and driving our economy. Affordable, reliable energy isn’t just a convenience — it’s essential to life as we know it in Ohio and across the globe. Our recent report, The Essential Facts on Essential Ohio Energy, showcases that Ohio stands as a national leader in energy, ranking 10th in overall energy production and 8th in electricity generation. Natural gas is at the heart of this success, supplying nearly 60% of the state’s electricity. Its impact is felt in ...
